First off, this is a long walk from town. We did it with three kids, who were cranky and tired by the time we arrived. The website says the place is open till 6, but when we arrived at 4:30, the tours had finished at 3 (not on the site anywhere I saw) and they won't let you see anything without a tour.

So we walked into the shop and I gave my kids a taste from a sample jar of jam. Not knowing better, my 5 year old double dipped. I was horrified and immediately told her no and begin to apologize. Rather than seeing that I realized the error and was apologetic and simply allowing me to pay for the jar, the shop worker scolded our family harshly! My five year old was so upset she spent 15 minutes sobbing on a bench outside from how harshly the woman spoke to her. Unbelievable that someone would address another person's child that way.

I went in later to express to the woman that the result of her actions was a devastated five year old girl and she did not even have the decency to apologize.

In decades of travel all over the world I've barely seen a person so mean to a child.

Even though we had checked with the tourist information about opening hours, the mill was closed when we arrived. Apparently it is only open three days a week, so call in advance to check.

However, there was a shop open, and they had a lot of fun things to taste. A very sweet lady introduced us to a variaty of vinegars, liqours and mustard oils. High quality and fun to try.

So eventhough the attraction as such was closed, we still has a good experience thanks to friendly shop lady :)

The historic mustard mill in Monschau!
This is a place for all the mustard lovers of the world to visit.
We have a German friend who introduced us to that Monschau destination and got our family hooked on the best mustards of the world.
It is not easy to "lucked out" and participate in a rare English language tour but the visitor center and the legendary store are the attractions by themselves. In May 2021 there were no tours anyhow due to post-pandemic lingering regulations but they were looking forward to resuming them.
We enjoyed the store and bought multiple fancy mustards. You can taste the amazing variety of mustards and make your choice. They are not cheap but of good quality . They have a Christmas variety of mustard. We liked the St John's berry mustard. The riesling flavor was also attractive. These mustards in ceramic jars make also great gifts.

20+ flavors of mustard made from the plain original recipe. OMG! Can’t get enough. Tour is interesting and good, but only in German, unless there is a large group with reservations to request English.

Mustards, wines, vinegars, chutneys and whiskeys are all available.

Great way to spend an hour or two.
Spent WAY too much.
Note: They cannot ship to the USA, so if you’re in Europe, stock up now!

Will absolutely visit again.

Love the mustard and always visit and stock up when in Monschau. The store also has an impressive wine selection. Well worth battling the ever present crowds to visit.

This was certainly the best visit of the holiday. This beautiful village was tucked away in the valley with loads of gift shops, café shops and all very welcoming and willing to help all the visitors in any way they could. Very pretty really old buildings and just what you would expect from a typical village in the Eiffel Region. This houses are very old world very photogenic and certainly well worth a visit

We were staying in Monschau over new year a very pretty old city with lots to see, went on a trip to visit St Michaels church in Hofen which was decorated for Christmas with a crib inside and out I have never seen anything more beautiful and the singing was beautiful.

The workings of the mill were very interesting to watch. We were lucky enough to stumble upon a group that booked a tour of the mill and could join. Im not sure if individuals are allowed to go on the tour.

Without the tour its still worth visiting as they have several local crafted liquors, whiskeys and mustards.

We never plan something a head so we just walked towards the Sendmuhle and hoped we could go on a tour. We arrived just before 11 o clock in the morning, and we found out that on Saturdays there are only pre booked tour available. So we were quite sad. But then we saw a big group of older german ladies, and we probably looked sad about the only prebooked tours on saturdays. So they asked us if we’d like to join. YES, of course! Eventhough everything was in German, we could still understand a lot of what were said (we’re Dutch, so we could figure it out). It ended up being a very nice tour, and we learned a lot about how mustard is being made.
