Lovely trip from Kuehlungsborn to Bad Doberan. Quite pricey for adults, but it's the only train connecting the two towns, so not much choice.
The ticket inspector was very nice when my elder mother was huffing up to the platform and they waited a minute or so for her to get onto the train. Otherwise it would have been an hour's wait in cold and windy Heiligendamm. Much appreciated.

Fun day tour to ride the train to the beachside then enjoy the town there. Riding one way for around an hour was the perfect amount of vintage train ride to enjoy, more than an hour or two and it gets a bit boring. The steam engine will move to the back of the train and start pulling the carriages in reverse, so if you are in the last car you might find yourself suddenly in the front with a great view of the engine at work.

Most cruise ships sell this excursion at well over the top prices. Our ship did a morning and an afternoon trip of no more than 4 hours. As our Baltic cruise Thomson Spirit docked for some 13 hours to enable the Berlin tour to be feasible , we prefered something a bit different. An excursion on a narrow gauge steam train from Bad Doberan to the seaside resort of Kulungsborn really attracted us. At £50 per person for just over 4 hours did`nt seem a good deal. We did it ourselves lasting over 8 hrs for 19 euros pp. Walk from cruise terminal on road towards the next station Werft on from the railway terminal at Warnemunde, about 10-15 mins. Walk down underpass to other side to station bus stop. Catch 119 bus to Bad Doberan,7 euro return. The Molli station is the end of the 25 min ride. The Molli is 45 mins of old fashioned ride actually through the streets of Bad Doberan to Kulungsborn East and terminal West. At both stations its a 10 min walk to the sea front. A lovely walk along the promenade from west to east made an embracing treat for 2 eighty yr olds.We did experience a blue sky day which helped a lot. After seeing so many cities on the cruise this made an alternative trip. The 119 bus is not very frequent, every 2 hours so check the times at the Tourist Information outside the cruise terminal. If you fancy doing this go for it.

We were six old out of shape Americans walking from the cruise ship following the parade of passengers toward the Warnemunde train station. Those folks were all headed for Berlin. Being old and not trusting the machine we asked for the ticket office, which required directions from two different people. We purchased 6 single tickets to Rostock Hbf – 1.8 euro each because Lander tickets don’t start until 0900. We purchased the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Lander ticket – 1 ticket for 4 people 34 euro and 1 ticket for 2 people 26 euro and split the cost. Get the S train from Warnemünde to Rostock Hbf, transfer to the regional express to Bad Doberan. Here we transferred to a tiny train station where we bought tickets and boarded the 'Molli. It is great clanging along the tracks through the city streets where it feels as if you can reach out and touch the buildings. Europe's longest linden tree-lined avenue also referred to, as the 'green tunnel' is a photo opportunity we did not miss. The new digital cameras allowed us to take many different types of pictures in a short time. The Europeans seemed content to watch the sights. The dining car is well worth the time and the service was excellent. We walked the local area and the wives did some shopping before boarding to return to Bad Doberan to catch the regional express to Wismar for some Mumme or Broyhan beer at Brauerei am Lohberg.

We recently did a Baltic cruise on of the stops was Warnemunde, we didn't want to go to Berlin because we didn't fancy the 3 hours each way on an coach so decided to do the molli steam train.
We got on the train to Rostock HBF from Warnemunde station (just outside the gates to the cruise terminal) we then took the train to Bad Doberan from there. To get the steam train you just cross the platforms so it's really easy the train from warnemunde cost only €7.40 each.
The steam train was €13 each. It is a proper journey of about 15km there are 2 main stops which are both pretty seaside places. You can get off the train and visit them both before continuing your journey.
A really good.value trip and about 1/3rd what you would pay the cruise line for the same trip.

If you are on a cruise and you are only interested in the Molli, don't bother with the cruise company's expensive excursion. You will probably get dragged round a church or something if you do that.
Take the S Bahn shuttle train into Rostock from Warnemunde (station is a short walk from the boat), then change onto a Wismar bound RE to Bad Doberan. This currently costs €8.40 for a return ticket. When you get to Bad Doberan, the Molli is across the platform. A return ticket on that costs €12 at present. It's a proper steam railway through pretty countryside rather than the usual collection of re-invigorated scrap you get in the UK.
It seemed to me that you could only buy a rail/119 bus ticket from the ticket machines at Warnemunde. It's probably quicker that way (Warnemunde to Bad Doberan took about an hour each way on the train as far as I remember). They speak English in the ticket office at Warnemunde though. IT'S ALL VERY EASY, SO DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!
Having reboarded the same Molli train, we were back on our ship in time for lunch too!

Bad Doberan to Khulungsborn by Moli steam train takes about 45 minutes and is a wonderful experience. The sounds, smells and atmosphere are a delight and the railway runs through lovely farmland, woods and small towns.
The small cafe in Khulungsborn station is fine for a light meal and a collection of railway artifacts are displayed adjacent to the platform and in a small museum.
A very pleasant day out
Return tickets on this steam railway cost about £ 10 per adult.

A charming steam train that goes along the coast to Heilingendam and beyond. A beautiful area and charming little villages. The stations look like something out of the nineteenth century- well worth a ride. This ride was part of a shore excursion on Norwegian Cruise Lines so I'm not sure of the price.

The Molli is the oldest narrow gauge steam train in the world that has been in operation more or less since 1886. If you are a train buff, this is a must visit. It is a short trip (15.4 km) from Bad Doberan Station to Kulungsborn West. There is regular train service every hour during the summer and every 2 hours during the winter.

How easy is it to get the steam train from the cruise port in Warnemunde and do they do return tickets so we can get back in time before the ship leaves. What is the last train back?
Written January 27, 2020
Unable to help. Our cruise ship arranged a coach to lift us to the Molli Train and back to Warnemunde. We really enjoyed the train, so hope you make it 🚆

Is it as easy as some people say to do this yourself rather than an organised excursion from the cruise ship?
Written April 20, 2019
Yes, easy enough to organise yourself but a little disjointed perhaps, if you're arriving on a cruise ship into Warnemunde. It also largely depends on the time available, the round trip would be an all day event. Firstly you'd have to get to Rostock then reconnect for Bad Doberan to catch The Mollie, so it would have to be carefully coordinated to get back to your cruise ship on time.

Would anyone be able to tell me how warm it is on the train in mid to late July? I presume it’s not air conditioned. Thanks so much!
Written April 3, 2019
It was pretty hot - no air con (obviously!) and not that many opening windows to get ventilation. It was ok, but if you've very troubled by the heat it's not ideal.

We're planning in April 2019 to travel from Warnemunde to Bad Doberan to catch the Molli train (return).
1. How much would a taxi cost from the port to Molli station?
2. How much time does the Molli
take each way?
Thanks in advance.

wat is de prijs van zo'n treinrit?
Written January 6, 2019
Hello, we are arriving in Warnemunde via Norwegian cruise ship in early June. I would like to take the Mollie train as part of an organized tour, since I also want to see the Scherwin Castle. Does anyone know of an organized tour that includes a trip on the Mollie train - either with or without additional sightseeing to the Scherwin castle? If it is impossible to do both, any recommendations for a day trip/organized tour to the Scherwin Caste would also be appreciated since I read that the castle is "not to be missed".
Thank you,
Anita

Can you take a bus directly to Bad Doberan from Warnemunde instead of the train to Rostock then on to Bad Doberan? Can you get to Lubeck from the Mollie? How long on the Mollie to Lubeck from Bad Doberan?
Written July 4, 2017
You probably can get to Bad Doberan by bus from Warnemunde but I would recommend going by train, and you can get a group ticket for up to 5 people which would cover this journey and your onward journey to Lubeck.
A Mecklenburg-Vorpommern ticket would cost 23 euros for 1 person, with each extra person costing a further 4 euros.
This would also cover a return journey if made on the same day. Fantastic value.
This does not include your trip on the Molli which does not go to Lubeck, only from Bad Doberan to Ostseebad Kuhlungsborn West.

Hi Howard,
We're coming into Warnemunde on the Celebrity Silhouette on 8/1/2017 and I'd like a little more info on your Mollie train ride. How far did you go? To what city? How long did it take? Was it a good day? Any suggestions? If you also did the Baltic cruise, can you think of any stand out experiences we need to try?
Thank you, in advance, for any information you can share.

Hi, from Warnemunde you will have to take a train to Rostock Hbf then change for a train to Bad Doberan, There are trains at 6 minutes past each hour from Rostock and it takes half an hour. If, for example, you caught the 0933 to Rostock Hbf, it arrives there at 0954 and you depart at 1006 arriving 1025. The Molli leaves from the same station. If there are a group of you(up to 5 people) it will probably be cheaper to get a group ticker which will cover both directions. Use the ticket machine in the station, which has an English option.
Journey time to Ostseebad Kuhlungsborn West is about 40 minutes. It is worth walking down to the seafront there, about 20 minutes.
On the return journey, if you have time, get off at Heiligendamm and walk down to the seafront there. The Grand Hotel was host to the G8 summit in 2007.
Good luck.

Could you give me an idea of the cost of this train ride. Was it costly getting connections from Waarnemunde? Was it difficult getting connections. Thank you.
Written April 10, 2017
The ticket go and return cost 14€50
You first must buy a bus ticket at 7,80€ ( go and return )
The connections are easy
