Impressive Romanesque church that you should not miss
Aug 2020
One cannot avoid getting lost in this charming town in the Aran Valley and any path one takes will always take you and this beautiful Romanesque church will be present.
Declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest, it is considered a standard of Aranese Romanesque architecture, it is located on a high point where the castle of Arties also stood, of which only one tower remains
It has two access doorways, the main one, which opens onto the north façade, is spectacular with semicircular arches, the decoration has semicircular motifs, the last archivolt is finished off with a border identical to that of the cornice of the apses. Two corbel stones are decorated in the shape of male faces, A cross is engraved on one of the blocks next to the door
The church has an altarpiece that represents several biblical scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary, on the ceiling there are some masterful wall paintings, which represent the biblical scenes of the Last Judgment with hell, heaven and the resurrection of the dead.

had a walk over to see the church and village which is very close to Parador de Arties. Well worth the short walk. Beautiful visit with a few lovely bars to have a drink at and take in the beautiful scenery

Brilliant frescoshx
Aug 2017 • Couples
There are no frescoes in the whole of Spain, and probably Europe too, can rival these for sheer brilliance and forcefulness

Like in a fairy tale
Jun 2017 • Couples
Although we couldn't visit it because it was closed, we sit outside and enjoyed the views a couple of times, in the afternoon but we also we came back at 12 pm to listen to the bells announcing a new day, my birthday.
When I'm in front of such a great monument I can't stop thinking about people being there when it was constructed and also during all these centuries until today. really special.

Getting to know Arties
Oct 2016 • Couples
The church of Santa Maria in Arties is very special and well worth a visit. It is not always open and they do expect a donation. It has to be seen to understand the beauty of the church. Make the effort to go 9n.
