It was quite moving to go there. We, I think, are only the second family members who have been able to make the trip.
Paul, the caretaker at the cemetery was very informative and interesting.
We reached Bad Tolz from Munich by train. No taxis at the station. So we opened Google maps and there were phone numbers for local taxis. Phoned a couple and got one who spoke excellent English. He came to station, took us t Durnbach and, as agreed came back after an hour to take us back to Bad Tulz

We were able to visit and pay our respects here. A peaceful place for these hero’s to rest. Worth stopping when in the area.

We always make a point of visiting CWGC cemeteries when on our travels across the Globe. Durnbach War Cemetery is maintained to a very high standard and well worth a visit. The number of full or partial bomber crews buried together really brings home the fact that around 55,000 Commonwealth bomber crews died. There are also the largest number of SAS graves I have ever seen in one cemetery.

This Commonwealth War Commission cemetery mainly contains the graves of Allied air crew including 484 RCAF members. Without a car, it's challenging to access but the best way is take the BOB train from Munich to Tegersee, which is a very scenic trip, and then take a taxi from Tegersee Bahnhof. It cost me about 50 euros for the trip there and back including 30 minutes at the cemet3ry.

We were lucky enough to go for the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice service. Stunning day and lots of people from many countries. The Germans were there in numbers too. It was a lovely service of remembrance and reconciliation. This is a place to visit any though.

Though it’s listed as the Durnbach War Cemetery, it is several kilometres north in a location identified as Moos on a map we got from the Information Centre in Gmund am Tegernsee.
The cemetery is lovingly and beautifully maintained. The visitors’ book shows that many who record their thoughts are German and it is sombre and moving reminder of the futility of war and the incalculable courage of the men buried here.
There are nearly 3,000 graves and cremation plaques here and the vast majority are airmen shot down over Bavaria, Wurtemberg, Austria, Hessen and Thuringia, brought from their scattered graves at the end of World War 2. The rest are men who were killed while escaping from prisoner of war camps in the same areas, or who died towards the end of the War on forced marches from the prisoner of war camps.

Didn't know this was near where we were staying. Drove past a couple of times then ventured in for a look. Lovely maintained memorial to those from primarily from member countries of the British Commonwealth including Canada, Australia & New Zealand with others from Poland, Norway & other patriots contributing to the NAZI's defeat. The front memorial says it all:

THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE

Like alle the cemeteries of the CWGC Commonwealth War Graves Commission in a real good condition with a booklet to find specific names and another for the condolences, thoughts aso. And close to the Tegernsee lake with its beautiful landscape. Just sth to stay for a moment and to think. If time, in comparison, try to find the Soldatefriedhof of Gmund and then make a comparison what respect means to your own country, when you're willing or forced to sacrify your life for it.
GPS Location is:
N 47° 46' 42"
E 11° 44' 0.7"
The cemetery contains 2,934 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, 93 of which are unidentified. One grave in the cemetery (III. C. 22.) contains the ashes of an unknown number of unidentified war casualties recovered from Flossenburg. Also, one grave (IV. A. 21.) contains the remains of 6 unidentified U.K. airmen.
There are also 30 war graves of other nationalities, most of them Polish.

This was a very emotional reunion with a place my Dad never lived long enough to know about. So for him and I, it brought a bit of closure
This cemetery is lovingly maintained and cared for, and actually the gateway is undergoing a renovation this fall.
Well worth the time to stop and ponder.....
