Great Looking Church in Little Town
Nov 2019
Vernon is a small town along the Seine; but dating back 12 century. This church looks little difference than others; but inside is well built, fairly typical like others.

When we visited the church still smelled of incense. There were some interesting things to see and some English descriptions.

Lovelt example of a mediaeval church with some interesting features.
Oct 2019
The church is unusually narrow and tall - so the nave has a particular look to it!
The clerestory levels are very large.
I was fascinated to see the Romanesque/Norman circular apse, with its typically solid piers, at the east end - very unusual and finely decorated, with varied and interesting carved capitals, some of which look rather Egyptian in style. (Buy why??)
Well worth looking in to.

Lovely small Flamboyant Gothic Cathedral with an organ and old and new stained glass. You can visit it for free. This church is still in progress and you may assist to a mass.
Very much affected by humidity and rain water through the ages.
Funds are needed for renovation!

Well worth a visit if you have the time

We caught a train from Paris to the medieval town of Vernon, where we hitched a ride on a little electric train to visit Monet's house and gardens in Giverny. On the way back as we had lots of time, so after having a late lunch in town, decided to visit the Collegiate Church of Our Lady, in the square opposite the Town hall. The exterior is very dirty and in need of a good clean, but it is still an interesting medieval-Gothic style building. The church was dedicated in the 11th century to "to the Holy Mother of God" and continued to expand into the 17th century, it has a long tall narrow nave, with external buttress to help support the high roof. The stained-glass windows both past and present allow lots of light into the church. Check out the stained-glass rose window on the west side of the church.
Like most churches in Europe it suffered much damage during WWII. There are many carvings in the church both in wood and stone, magnificent wooden pulpit is a good example of this. If you happen to visit on Sunday you will hear the great organ play. There is also a shrine here to Catholic priest Jacques Hamel, who was murdered while saying mass by two Muslim in men 2016.

TIP: If visiting the Church please dress appropriately, this not a tourist attraction but a place of worship.

On time in between transport from Giverny and your train back to Paris, visit this small but beautiful, well kept, Gothic/Romanesque Church in Vernon.

We came early in the morning to this beautiful village. My boyfriend has never been to Europe, so first Notre Dame and then this sweet church. It was so quiet, and so spiritual. As we walked further into the church we marveled at the beautiful stained glass windows throughout and the church and the intricately carved wooden pulpit...What struck me, as it did in another church in Gordon, the sunlight shone extra bright on the Virgin Mary....again I say "So Spiritual"....

You can walk from the train station to the church, we just didn't have time, we would have liked to have more time there, but the area around Monet's lily pond took all our day.

A really nice Gothic style church in quite a small town. Finding it was a delightful surprise. Wish we had more time to visit.
