This is our first stop when we walked up from the ship. A simple tower; but it has been there since the 1100s. This little town certainly do not have something that is unique; however, there are few buildings, and its local church, are worth to explore for their workmanship.

This Archives Tower is one of the more interesting things to see in Vernon. The 72 foot-high structure was built as a keep in the late 1100s. There is no castle here now, except for a few remnants, but the big tower has survived (albeit heavily restored) as one of the few remaining round towers in Normandy.
Once called the Sixteen Knights Tower, the Archives Tower acquired its present name in the early 1800s when it was used to store the town’s archives. The French Ministry of Culture designated the tower a historical monument in 1840.
You can get some nice photos of the Archives Tower from several vantage points, but structures that have been built close to it obscure its lower section from most angles. A small public garden adjacent to the tower offers a top-to-bottom view as well as signage and an opportunity to inspect the tower’s base. The interior isn’t open to the public.

Vernon was a protected, walled city along the Seine river. This tower is a beautiful souvenir of past history.

This tower is a remnant of an ancient Vernon castle dating back to the 12th century! You cannot go in it and a small plaza with a fountain was built next to it. It's nice that it has survived all these centuries.

A good photo opportunity but that's about all. Set in small gardens with current building works in progress so not particularly scenic. What you see is what you get. There is no access to the tower and no information boards about the tower.

As we wandered around the town, our guide pointed out this tower. The tower is all that remains of the original Vernon castle that had been built in the early 1100s. This tower was known as "the keep" used for defense purposes. You can see the slits in the walls so that arrows could be shot at any enemies. It was a beautiful day when we were there so the many colorful flags at the top were blowing around and it made a nice sight.

As everything that I have seen in Vernon...Useless, drab, grey and sad... Really disappointing. It is a tower, clearly remade.

Nice tower, remainder of an ancient fortress, visible only externally. Nowadays it is surrounded by civil buildings and houses. In the same street one can see some nice medieval houses with wooden structure.

We walked around the watch tower and the attached medieval protective walks. The history is interesting as this is connected to Richard the Lion Hearted, but you can't go inside. Just worth walking by.....
