Veurne is an undiscovered gem. Motorists rush on the motorways from the seaports to further destinations without stopping here for a welcome break. Just over the border from France, this idyllic and charming little town is well worth a visit. Plenty of cafe's and restaurants to choose from around the beautiful city square. Where could you get a cup of tea for €2 with a biscuit and a little glass of advocat?! The SInt Walburga Church is well worth a visit and also the Town Park behind it. It's the perfect place for a relaxing little break before returning to the busy, noisy motorway.

Beautiful building from the outside, but if you ever have a chance of seeing the inside, please please do not hesitate! They still have the original golden-coloured decoration from the 15th century on the walls, truly a little gem. Amazing it's still there.

Veurne was "the capital of Belgium" during WWI, so there's lot's to see in the town hall (the king's headquarters were here)
The history of the town can be seen in all kind of ways in the townhall
There are many nice paintings, also an original Paul Delvaux (who used to live in Veurne)
Worth a visit!

To me, the centre of Veurne is the most beautiful city square in Belgium. The impressive city hall, the very nice buildings around the square, and the good restaurants and bars make a visit to Veurne rewarding. You can find similar in Ghent, Bruges, Antwerp...but not with same feeling of being "real" and for common peope instead of for tourists.
Do visit Veurne!

when you are in the center of the city, it is good to pass by, but I have seen more impressive ones in Belgium.

Very beautiful town full of history and historic places. Some lovely chocolate shops. Didn't go to the museum but the town itself has lots of character. Would visit again for a longer look round.

The town hall and the rather late belfry, the latter symbolising the joined power of Veurne and the rural area around the town, is very nice, as is the architecture of the town hall. Sadly, for individual tourists the town hall is closed. The belfry is closed for all tourists. Located on the Grote Markt, which has many other nice buildings.

Fantastic building, with beautiful medieval aesthetics - not dissimilar, from some of the architecture which can be seen in the Markt in Bruges.

Parking is available in the main square (Grote Markt) of Veurne, nearby the building, and it is free, but - please note - one needs, a Blue Parking Time Disc (rather like a disabled badge disc for the UK) - which one can purchase at Petrol Stations. Both the Belgian and Dutch discs, can be used in either country, which then allows one, free parking for 2 hours maximum.

The square itself is perfect for meeting up, and bonding with friends or family - as there are a myriad of restaurants and bars in the square, per se....which, one can then admire the architecture of this building from...

The tour itself, was great.

Best time of the year? Christmas period, when they have an ice-rink in the Square ('Veurne on Ice'), and the Town Hall looks most pleasing in late afternoon Winter darkness, juxtaposed with how it is lit. The only problem......don't go skating like I did, last year, and spend the majority of the time on your posterior....a group of teenagers said I resembled a 'dog with worms'.....(think about it!)....ahhhh, Belgian humour !!!

There was a small but very interesting exhibition on when we went. It told you all about Marie Curie and her x rays in use during the war. Even had one of her mobile radiology tables on display.
Interesting film clips about WW1 and exhibits too. It told you about the flooding of the Yser plain which formed a natural barrier so stopping the German advance and the man Karel Cogge whose idea it was.
Also Veurne and neighbouring towns were flooded by thousands of refugees and so had to provided schools for the many children that came with them.
Then when you go into the old courtroom where they have an actual guillotine and it tells you about the last murderer to be guillotined.
Then there is a excellent room where King Albert 1 established the headquarters of the Belgium Army.
