the visitors centre was closed as we visited the site in november but the site is accessable. It was over 40y when I visited the boatlifts during my primary school time. It is still a peaceful and well kept site. Beautiful Industrial archeology.

The four ascensors in La Louviere is a freely accessible site, part of European industrial heritage. Find it on google maps, drive and park somwhere nearby. There are other ascensors right inside La Louviere, we went towards the first one. You can also walk by the canal and see all of them. Very interesting.

I walked along the canal only presuming one of the fabled locks was in front of me. Crossing over at a bridge, markers numbered sundry attractions, finally stumbling across lock #2. What was amazing was the solution to a 60M plus [or 200 feet plus] problem with canal levels, finessed over four locks. WWI prevented an even earlier completion. Used only by pleasure craft these days, algae is common, as are ducks. Seeing lock #2 was a chance to simply acknowledge the historical achievement and technological advancement.

Although we joked about this with friends, the visit was really interesting and informative. Recommend a trip in the lift on the boat to get the full experience.

My adult son and I rode along the canal that eventually loops back to La Louviere. The ride was approx. 21 kms in total. It was a perfect summer night activity where there is extended daylight but you can enjoy cooler temperatures. We enjoyed the sights along the way. This centre was not open but still a beautiful building to admire along with the little villages along the way.
