We parked our car in a parking lot nearby and walked to the beguinage. It's large and very nice, one of the prettiest beguinages of Belgium I've been to. It's a very pleasant walk, especially early in the morning - it was quiet and we had the whole place to ourselves.

This is a walled complex which consists of a small church . Bascially this was founded in the 12 th century by Mr. Hendrick van breda. This is a complex which helped the small group of the pious catholic womens who wished to live their life in comtemplation & prayer in chastity . These are some 29 houses which are maintained for such group. The courtyard has beautiful herb garden & the museum includes includes a permanent exhibition of relics from the collection of Hamers IJsebrand and Harrie Hammers.

absolute silence and unique old buildings in the centre of the city. Walk around to feel the atmosphere of the 17e century.

The Beguines were a fascinating order, and this beguinage and museum is one of the best we have seen. The introductory video was fascinating, including interviews with beguines, The museum itself was also extremely good. Add to this the most helpful staff we have met in a long time, and you have an extremely good experience.

A Beguinage (Begijnhof) is always a hidden jewel. Beguines were "religious women", widows or spinsters who wished to live independent but commited life outside the recognised orders with their vows of fidelity and poverty. This beguinage is quite big. The location was used to be a castle domain. It is characterized by a gatehouse and elongated tree-lined square. Its Calvary chapels and Lourdes grotto reveals a lively and popular faith. The museum illustrates the beguinage culture. When we were there, some archaeology students were carried out the excavation in this site and they found the foundation of the church in the former location ( 13th century).

We visited the Beguinage and the museum on Jul 23th. We parked our car on a parking lot (6€ for a day) in front of the National Playing Card Museum (Parking Muylenberg, Beekstraat). It is about 0,7 miles by foot from the Béguinage.
You can buy a combi ticket for the Beguinage Museum, the National Playing Card Museum and the Taxandriamuseum. Instead of 3 times 5€ you pay only 7,5€.
The Beguinage is a quiet enclosed park with little houses. The museum is small. The explanations are only in Dutch. When we visited the church was not open, they were restoring it.

A beguinage (From the French béguinage) is an architectural complex which formerly housed beguines, lay religious women who lived in community without taking vows or retiring from the world.
They were encircled by walls and separated from the town proper by several gates which were closed at night. During the day the beguines could come and go as they pleased. Beguines came from a wide range of social classes, though truly poor women were only admitted if they had a wealthy benefactor who pledged to provide for their needs.

The tour starts with a 15 minute movie about the last living beguine in Turnhout. After this introduction the visitor can walk through the museum, which houses several nice rooms and a lot of relics besides everyday working stuff.

The museum is part of Tram41. This is a collaboration between three museums of Turnhout. For a reduced price you can visit all three of them.
Although the museum has fixed entree hours, due to a volunteer, we were able to visit it an hour earlier, and received a personal tour.

I have seen a very small beguinage museum in Breda, and the beguinage museums in Bruges and Tongeren looked quite small, although I did not enter there. This one in Turnhout surprised me by being quite large, including several nicely decorated rooms. It is located in a beautiful beguinage. Although beguines lived a modest life, there are some nice old items (relics, cutlery, tools, sculptures, books, important documents, etc.), from the 17th century at least. Beguines' activities are explained, as well as the distinction between beguines and nuns.
