We went to Hintertux for a week in August. The main attraction was the all-year abaility to snowboard/ski on the glacier, but there are plenty of other things to do.
The glacier had previously been snowed on around 8 days prior to our arrival. Conditions were definitely spring-like, with the best of the snow being on the two open blue runs, while the reds tended towards being much icier as the snow cover got increasingly thinner and the glacier ice was exposed. All is still fully rideable, although I would recommend at the very least a fresh warm wax on any equipment before you go. The conditions can be very slow at this time of year as snow verges on (and turns to)slush. Having said that, we had a lot of fun!!
Ski teams have training camps here but despite what other reviews on other sites have said, they do not hog all the slopes. There are slaloms etc set up on parts of slopes depending on the training they're doing, but there's plenty of space and generally doesn't stop you using the same run.
Snowboarding/Skiing starts from the top of the mountain at 3250m - the 3 cable cars needed to get up there take around 30mins to reach the top overall, but once up there the drag lifts service 6 out of 7 open runs. The 7th is one run that was open down to the station a 2660m, allowing you to ski down to get food etc rather than having to take the lift down.
The slopes were open from 8am through to 1.30pm when the drag lifts stopped. Any skiing or riding past this time was starting to get very difficult.
During our time in Hintertux we also rented mountain bikes and did a couple of the trails around the mountain. There is no specific bike route plan, but we were told that the hiking trail map was the same. The only bad thing was that it didn't give you any idea as to the degree of difficulty of the route. The trails in general are well maintained and signposted.
We also visited Nature's Ice Palace, located at the top of the glacier, which is a completely natural glacial fissure discovered in 2007 and open to the public. The interior was stunningly beautiful, however being English set us at a huge disadvantage as the entire tour was in German. We got the general gist, but probably missed some of the most interesting information due to the technical nature of the tour.
Other activities included paragliding, hiking and non-glacial caves.
Outside of daytime activities, Hintertux itself has a very limited amount of things to do. In the actual village, there are 3 or 4 hotels, each with a bar and restaurant, a fire station, a mini shop and a couple of clothing stores. At the base of the gondola, you have a couple more shops, a couple of bars and another three or four hotels. Hintertux is definitely a place to get away from everything as it's very quiet at night (meaning if what you want to do is sit on your balcony with a bottle of wine talking rubbish, this is a great place to do that). if you need something more lively, then Mayrhofen is the place to stay at the bottom of the valley.

Fun time. Being from the US, cant say we have the opportunity to ever ski during our summer. What a treat to do this.
Get there early. Get there when it opens to have the best snow. Summer skiing. By 11:00 am to noon the snow becomes very heavy and like mash potatoes. Then it is time to Apre ski, and enjoy the magnificent views. The views are breath taking.
There are 6-10 decent runs. Nothing difficult. Mainly easy blue at toughest.
Everyone in all the shops and on the mountain were extremely helpful. We were not sure what to expect but everyone made the process easy. Rental equipment was high quality too.
Great different experience for the summer!! Ski early.

We contacted the resort prior to driving 6 hours to check if it was suitable for beginners. Our children (7/9) had only skied once before. The resort assured us it was suitable for beginners.
This is just not true.
To access any blue run (beginners) you have to do a red run. This was a disaster and ruined the trip.
Do not go here if you are a beginner skier.

I was there 27 of july. according to The website there were 155 cm snow at top. In reality there were very little show. And most of the areas that were skiable was occupied by skiteams practising
Slalom. We bought à daycard for the lifts. When we at lunchtime decided there was no use skiing any moore and went down and changed equipment to do some walking.
But they did not let us take The lift up again even though we had à full day liftcard !!!!
so there are much better summerskiing elsewhere in Austria and more decent people running them

I did not come here to ski, but I still had a wonderful afternoon on the glacier. The ride up is twisty and long and a bit dangerous, but the fun begins after that. the lift is easily accessable and quickly moving so no lines form. it is also very safe- the carts close and are not able to be opened while moving on the track (someone in my tour group tried). There are restaurants and shops on the glacier and the one restaurant (can't remember the name, I went last summer) has delicious hot chocolate and good food options. The view from the top was amazing. We snow tubed and took pictures. Wish I could go back!

Wonderful views a sunny day. Great skiing, even for a "almost" new-beginner like me. The mountain has slopes that is suitable for all levels of skiing.

Excellent snow conditions in mid-April. Excellent lift system. Watch out for Easter crowds on the key linking pistes and at ski school time but there is lots of space on the glacier and try out the ski routes if you want to get away from it all. If very busy get an earlier bus.

Salve!

Considering traveling to Hintertux this coming November 2017. Any one know how the early skiing is this time of the year? And what about Language barriers? We are English and know limited German. We have friends who live in Munich, but I don't think they can stay on the mountain the whole trip. Kind of concerned.

Hello! I was on Hintertux in the end of October/early November last year. At this time usually you can skiing only above 2660 masl, but actually there is enough of pistes. Snow consitions can be very different - during my 5-days stay temperture on top (3250 masl) was from -2 till -16°C.
No any problem with language - almost all people can speak English.
Take with you creme with 50UV filter. Sun theee can burn your face in few hours.

Was it crowded, thinking of going at half term October.
Graham C

Difficult because October is even more dependent upon the weather than normal. Sunday is always very busy especially if there is new snow. Apart from Sunday, October last year was not busy at all. The major use of the resort is by National and Club teams using two areas for racing training. Punters are therefore not the whole story. If you can get out on the back slopes where the racers do not want to go you will be fine and snow is almost always good. Little chance of skiing down to the mid station - very rarely are these runs open. It is all above the Fernerhaus. Main dangers are lifts closed due to high winds or skiing in white outs. Cannot guarantee 6 days perfect skiing but we go every year and there are relatively few bad days. If you can wait to see forecasts before making up your mind all the better. If you should get a bad day there are alternatives. Lanersbach and Vorder Lanersbach are within a 15 min ski bus ride of the snow and have more infrastructure for other activities. Further away are Finkenberg and Mayrhofen.

Hi, I am travelling to Hintertux from Salzburg and was wondering what the best way to get there is? I was planning on getting a train but I ma not sure what is the closest station and if it is Innsbruck how to get from there to the ski field?
Alan B

The best way is by train to Jenbach, then change to the Zillertaller line to Mayrhofen where you can catch the service bus to Tux which is at the base of the glacier. It is a fairly straightforward journey,so enjoy the scenery and the skiing.
