Bad Hofgastein has a major upgrade at Schlossalmbahn, replaced the ancient funicular railway. Queuing at the base station is virtually non-existent. The base station is a new built, including a high standard ski depot, bus station, car parking, toilet facilities, cafe/bar/restaurant and the step-free access to the 10 person telecabin.

As a ski area, Bad Hofgastein has a reasonable number of runs. It is connected to Angertal and Bad Gastein further. The red H1/H2 is a long run, dropping some 1400m. Most runs above midstation level are in very good condition, some challenging. The home runs into Bad Hofgastein could be icy and steep in places.

Lift system and connections are good. Signage on piste could be better. Grooming is good in general but not to the highest standard.

Ski huts and restaurants in Bad Hofgastein are mostly in mid run locations, slightly inconvenient for tired legs and non-skiing visitors.

It is very easy to bus up to Dorfgastein. Bad Hofgastein is a good base for a week skiing.

I have skied in many resorts in Austria, and this is one of the most beautiful ones. it is linked to Bad Gastein which is absolutely breathtaking. I am a little disappointed with the village of HofGastein which is mostly tourist accommodation. I would have preferred a bit more shops and restaurants. The runs are absolutely beautiful, you start on snowy mountains and ski down into tree lined forest runs. It can be a little busy so the runs do get chopped up very quickly.

Fantastic slopes - really good range of red slopes that are nice and wide! The Gastein valley and the different areas are within close proximity, which means there is a lot of skiing that can be done. Some of the blue pistes are busy which means they can become quite slushy and bumpy at times. A good place for intermediate skiers

I have been skiing for over 30 years and I have never come across such steep blue runs!! I found it very intimidating, especially if someone was a novice or nervous skier, thinking that they should be ok on a blue run.
On the plus side, the runs were well groomed, the lift system was excellent and you can get to other areas and have a full day.
But those blues.........

Our first ski experience in Austria was in Bad Hofgastein. It is a verry good choice to enjoy ski. Superior satisfaction, regard ski posibilities a lot of slopes, for any level. Bad Hofgastein is a nice and peacefull village. Well organized public transportation, free parking at ski center, not crowdy on the slopes. We could ski in all ski areas in the zone with same ski pass. Recomand

We last skied here 6 years ago and it was in desperate need of ski-lift replacement then. 6 years on nothing has happened and nothing seems to be forecast. Consequently expect long queues at busy times, closures when windy and slow ascents. The whole valley seems to be in a decline (lots of derelict buildings and stuck in the 80s) - worse in Bad Gastein, and moving to Bad Hofgastein. Dorf Gastein does not seem to have suffered yet but the future does not look good.
The main Bad Hofgastein by-pass is still 'under-construction' with no apparent movement in the last 8 years.
We wont return for at least 10 years if at all. Nearby Hochkonig, Saalback/Leogang areas have far more to offer and have modernised their infrastructure.
Its sad to have to write such a poor review :-(

We have travelled on skiing holidays for 17 years now and have visited most of top resort in the alps during that time . Bad Gastein stands with best of them in our opinion. This resort has so much to offer every visitor because there is such a variety of attractions available on your door step. Firstly the slopes are many and varied and really good skiers can cover vast areas in the day .It links up with Angertel and Bad Hofgastein with excellent lift system and this is a large area . There are runs for every standard in this area . Take a short bus run (always on time) to Bad Dorfgastein for beautiful relaxing and very scenic ski runs are plentiful. Really nice area not to be missed. Then Sportgastein is in other direction and it will not disappoint the more adventurous skiers and easily managed by all intermediate skiers.All the mountains are serviced by a excellent lift systems and also with wonderful mountain restaurants ,probably best we have encountered .A word of caution about snow conditions as this can make a huge difference in enjoyment levels in any resort . Pick your time of travel well to get best from excellent resort. The natural hot water springs bring the Gastein valley into a league of its own .It is known worldwide for its Thermal springs and spa's. Almost every holel has access to these bath areas so make use of them after hard day on slopes. This resort has serious character about it and has so much going on that it will suit almost every visitor ,skier or non skier.Its a resort that fits our eye so we will return again in near futute.

I visited with my six year daughter who had been skiing for two weeks in France and heading down blues & easy reds.

The ski school in Bad Hofgastein is not very welcoming - unsmiling instructors, harsh voices. Children were already crying on the bus up to Angertal. At Angertal there are some good nursery slopes for complete beginners. The trouble is if you are at the 'easy blue' level all the runs in Bad Hofgastein and Bad Gastein are especially just narrow tracks. This an issue for a few reasons:

1) Skiing narrow tracks down a mountain is pretty boring if that's all you get to ski;
2) A lot of these narrow tracks had big, steep drops which were unguided. If you or your child went over the edge it wouldn't be a good outcome;
3) Some of the pistes start as blue, only to then turn into red runs. That's a pretty cruel thing to do to people who are just learning to ski.

Back to the Bad Hofgastein ski school. The classes were big (10 children to one instructor) and there were no introductions, getting to know you, it was just straight into skiing in a long line. I could immediately see issues - a long stretches out line made it easy to see children becoming lost from the group - indeed at our hotel we met other guests & heard about three children who had become lost & only found when members of the public telephoned their parents using the card that hangs around each child's neck. I heard from another guest that their child had been crying so the instructors had locked the boy in a room on his own until his parents eventually came back to get him!

Then you need to think what happens if a child is too tired, injured or just needs the look when you have a ratio of 1 to 10 on the slopes. They didn't even all fit into one gondola together. Owing to the safety & safeguarding issues I could identify I pulled my daughter out of ski school very quickly on the first day.

Back to the resort. Overall the runs are generally fairly easy reds, and you can do all the lifts & runs in Bad Gastein & Bad Hofgastein in about four hours. There are a few other peripheral stations (e.g. Sportgastein) that you need a car or to take a bus to access.

A few comments about the Bad Hofgastein / Bad Gastein ski areas:

1) The piste marking could be better. They don't use colour-coded poles that show the rating of the slope & there are no numbered km markers to show how much further there is on the run as you get in France.

2) The lifts are generally very good, modern & fast and even at half-term the longest I queued was 5 minutes - far better than France.

3) The area is well served by WCs in the lift stations & also in the restaurants & there are plenty of places to eat.

Overall, Bad Gastein / Bad Hofgastein is a decent ski station for intermediate skiers - it is quite a small ski area so would probably suit those looking for a long weekend's skiing with friends. Staying in Bad Gastein would be better than Bad Hofgastein as there are more bars in Bad Gastein.

With regard to snowboarding, the area as a whole is great, but Bad Hofgastein was not a very good place for less experienced snowboarders as it had too many narrow tracks. The lift system was modern and good, but the best area for boarding was Sport Gastein and Dorfgastein. The main problem with Bad Hofgastein is how quiet it is - better suited perhaps to families. The bars/restaurants on the mountains all closed early and there was no Apres Ski life at all either at the bottom of the slopes or in the village. The bus system also finishes early, which is perhaps why everything else closes early. I've been to lots of Austrian resorts, but have never found a resort as quiet as Bad Hofgastein. I suspect Bad Gastein up the valley would have more life.

Great options to ski, but some lifts can get crowded.
Terrain can get bit rough in the afternoon in some areas.
