I have just returned from Phillip Bartlett’s South Island of New Zealand Winter Tour, and it was the experience of a lifetime! Phillip and his assistant, Cam, escorted us to magical locations on this splendid island. We experienced and photographed stunning seascapes, magnificent mountain tops, breathtaking lake reflections, gorgeous glacial ice, and silent, misty lakeside vistas.

We greeted the rising sun on one morning as it bathed us in the most vibrant warm orange glow while we photographed the Moeraki Boulders, and on another morning as it struggled to penetrate the mist hugging the tree-lined shores of a silent pond as we captured mysterious, minimalist images. We bid adieu to the sun from what felt like the top of the world, atop a jagged peak in Fiordland National Park, reached via an exciting helicopter ride. We experienced the thrill of photographing Fox Glacier from the open door of a helicopter, and we saw the grandeur of the Milford Sound by boat tour on a morning which served up picture-perfect weather.

Phillip shared locations showcasing the best of the South Island. Some are well-known and not to be missed, and some off the beaten track, providing a more intimate glimpse of this magnificent island.

I appreciate the professionalism with which Philip runs his business. He and Cam are extremely competent, personable, and delightful to spend time with. They are clearly committed to ensuring that their clients have a fantastic experience. Phillip provides expert photographic assistance tailored to the desires of each client. I was grateful for composition instruction exceeding anything I have received before. Others enjoyed the freedom to photograph these stunning locations with less assistance.

From arrival to departure, Phillip ensured a smooth and enjoyable experience. The accommodations were terrific, the food plentiful and delicious. And the coffee! What a treat the coffee was. The vehicles were comfortable and driven with confidence, skill, and attention to passenger comfort. My fellow travelers were a joy to spend time with.

The trip was a magnificent experience in terms of photographic opportunities and results. The sheer joy of standing in some of the most beautiful locations on earth was priceless.

I hope to be able to join Phillip on a future adventure!

Thank you for your very kind review Billee. I am thrilled that your experience with us was everything you had hoped for and more. We really did enjoy exceptional photography during the workshop. There are many more coffee shops to be explored (and a few landscapes as well...) so I look forward to your next visit with us.

Phillip leads amazing trips. We spent 12 days touring the South Island and saw many of the iconic sights. And saw some unique landscapes, and had some unique experiences, which is Phillip's specialty. I would highly recommend traveling with Phillip for a quality photographic experience

Talk about variety! Phillip Bartlett delivered well beyond his promised itinerary! His familiarity with the areas and knowledge of the local guides and drivers really pampered us all. The accommodations ran the gamut from "best available" to 'drop-dead gorgeous'! The VERY, VERY EARLY AM traveling demands were well worth it once we arrived at a destination and had a chance to situate for, hopefully, a great shot. His understanding of timing & lighting in the mornings in various spots really enhanced both the photographic experience & visual enjoyment. Humor, food, great stories, new/old friends, what could be better than that! Having travelled with him now, three times, we look forward to the next two, and then some! Capture New Zealand Photography Tours provided transport to gorgeous locations and offered valuable advice on how to best capture the beauty of the landscape in your photographs. It was very well planned and executed, an enjoyable experience.

In April I joined several other keen photographers and toured the South Island with Phillip Bartlett and Cam his very able right hand man. The trip was very comfortable, 4 people travelling in each four wheel drive vehicle. We visited some very special locations and Phillip was a very attentive coach sharing his time with each of us as we required. I have done this trip before with others and I can say the trip with Phillip was extraordinary and delivered excellent value regardless of skill level. I agree with all the comments made by jaysilvey.

I had a delightful time travelling around the South Island with Phillip and his assistant, Paul, and the five other guests, on the 2016 winter landscape photography workshop. Phillip is a superb landscape photographer; however, during the workshops, he almost never pulled out his camera. Rather, his focus was entirely on his guests to ensure that we got to the best locations at the best times to take the best possible shots of some pretty phenomenal landscapes. And, to top it off, he arranged for us to have the chance to do some aerial photography over the Fox Glacier.

Phillip and Paul wanted all of us to have a grand holiday as well, so we were well-fed and well-caffeinated (which meant that we visited some charmingly quirky coffee shops and cafes up and down the South Island). They also kept us amused with Kiwi facts and anecdotes (some of which might even be true) as we drove between locations. In short, this was a fabulous photography workshop and a delightful introduction to the South Island of New Zealand.

I was looking for a photography tour that allowed me to learn and develop my photography skills in my own time, but also be able to draw on the experience of a professional photographer. Phil was more that... professional as well as patient and a genuine great guy! Although not sure about his taste in music.

Phil was always willing to assist wherever necessary, from tour logistics and making sure you're comfortable right through to showing us the spectacular scenery of the New Zealand Southern Alps, and the surprise locations that he was kind enough to share with us too from the years of travelling all over NZ.

I could genuinely see the improvement in my photos throughout the tour thanks to Phil, as well as the others on the tour, especially Possum Boy. It was never a surprise to see Phil had already scouted possible locations for the best light well before I was even out of bed.

Happy to say that I would definitely do it again. Not only for the photography and the great natural wonders of NZ, but for Phil and the other great people you meet also. Miss the streaky bacon though. :)

By the way, you have to do the helicopter out over Fox glacier with the doors off. And winter was amazing in New Zealand. Coldish, but definitely worth it.

Can't rave enough! Great guide, great photographer (and the video of our group was awesome also!) and all around great guy. My fiancé and I had a phenomenal experience in New Zealand and it was all thanks to Phil. From the moment you wake up till Phil has your adventure planned out. Was a very stress free tour and extremely rewarding due to Phil's knowledge of the locale. Don't think we could have picked a better man for the job!

miss ya already Phil!

I had spend about 15 days with Philip Bartlett on a South Island photography tour in 2013. This was without any doubt my best photography tour for the reasons described below.

(a) I was looking at a combination of improving my photography and also sight seeing NZ, this tour delivered on both counts. First, being a local to NZ, Philip knew all the scenic places to visit in NZ (I did south island). Then with his photographic eye, he was able to get us at the right time of the day to enjoy the beauty.
Philip was ready to share his expertise of photography and never held back on his knowledge of photography. I did see a marked improvement in my photography skill after this visit.
(b) Was it fun? We had a great group of people which was well lead by Philip. He has a great sense of humour. As the leader of the troupe, he got the best of all of us (we were a group of 6 visitors). It was definitely a lot of fun with the group.
(c) Logistics during the entire trip was perfectly planned, great hotels, good food and absolutely comfortable.

I found the trip a bit pricey (NZ is for sure expensive) but I would say I got the bang for the buck.

We had a wonderful time with Phillip and Paul on the south island of New Zealand, learning so much about taking landscape photography while enjoying ourselves immensely. Phillip made sure we were all in the right spot at the right time and we came away with some fantastic images. What a wonderful country!
Phillip and Paul made sure we were happy with everything - accommodation, meals, etc. and if anything was amiss, they sorted it out immediately. Can't fault them. Thanks heaps, guys!
