New Years day stopped in Helmsley fir a stroll.
Church was open.
A remarkable collection of painted walls and most remarkable for myself a series of stained glass windows featuring St Columba !

From the outside it looks like a typical small market town church. Inside it has some of the most colourful drawings I've ever seen on church walls. Well worth the visit.

When visiting Helmsley in December we always have a look at the Christmas Tree Festival in the church, and while I would recommend others to do likewise I would suggest taking time to actually look at the fabric of this attractive church.

The standout feature for me is the beautiful north wall with its covering of murals. They were painted by a London artist called Gast in 1909 and feature a series of trees that attempt to portray the course of Christianity in the area.

They are in my view both unique and interesting and a must see if you are in Helmsley.

We had a look around the churchyard and then luckily the church was open so we went in and admired this lovely village church.

Fantastic Church with an original Norman arch. Lovely paintings on walls modern but told a story. Amazing history and a gem indeed. Maybe out of the way but worth the detour.

A great little gem. Different to many churches with the paintings on the wall. Past history showing how the church evolved.

Very characterful building set in nice grounds. Certainly look to have once been at the centre stage of Helmsley.

Helmsley church is really beautiful, and very interesting. It has a lot of wall paintings and a fascinating history.

They have a new 'Heritage Trail' that guides you around and tells you all about everything of interest, which makes it really easy and informative. It was definitely worth a visit, and very peaceful and welcoming too.

This is an impressive and attractive church in the centre of the lovely little town of Helmsley, with the imposing castle nearby. Normally I love looking in every nook and cranny of old churches to discover their secrets, but as it was full of Christmas trees for the festival I simply had a stroll then took the opportunity to sit in a pew and take the time to admire the fabulous wall murals which are undoubtedly the highlight of this church.

And what of the Christmas tree festival? It was splendid and has a wide range of imaginatively decorated trees - so do visit, and take the time to vote for the best tree!

Fascinating church with Arts & Crafts murals. These include a "family tree" of the northern Christian church's history and the life of St Oswald. Good stained glass including in the decorated side chapel a very large window with the life of St Cuthbert.
Good organ and very interesting small museum at the west end - there is also a chap who is full of info; a very welcoming place.
We attended the said BCP HC on Wednesday at 9.30 am (congregation of 5) which (unusually for these days) was properly presented - such a pity the present vicar is about to retire!
