About
In the center of the picturesque town of Reguengos de Monsaraz, you can visit one of the world’s most unusual wineries. Keeping alive a tradition initiated by the Romans over 2000 years ago, the Jose de Sousa winery is equipped with 114 clay amphorae, a fermentation method as rare as it is old. The old cellars are below ground level and contain the urns and two open lagares for treading the grapes

Very nice, proactive service to organize the tour. The tour itself was highly informative and interesting. It was our first time seeing and learning about wines made in clay pots, which we found so special. The winery takes part in sustainability initiatives, which they informed us about prior to our trip, so that we could collect used corks for a good cause. Highly recommend!

We are wine enthousiasts and have been visiting producers in France, Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal. We chose to visit this winery because of the clay pots which we never saw before.
The guide was professional and instructive through out the visit and tasting.
We found the price fairly expensive for the 3 wines and some biscuits. We would have expected some cheese or ham for the 25€ adult price. Especially considering kids have to pay also and there is no discount in the shop when doing the visit.

Excellent tour and tasting with a knowledgeable guide! I enjoyed seeing the old and new wine making techniques and learning about the history of the winery. The wines I tasted were excellent, and based on that I purchased my favourite bottle as well as one I hadn't tried; it was also quite nice for the price! This is an easy recommendation. Do a tour and tasting here!

Wonderful tour of a small, but unique winery. The winery does their fermentation in large centuries old clay pot. We had a semi- private tour, with one other couple. Our tour guide from the winery was very knowledgeable.

We did a tasting of 3 “premium” red wines- all tasted amazing

The Adega was in the town where we were staying and we were able to walk to it very easily which meant we could both relax and enjoy the wine tasting which clearly is a bonus. The choice of tours was very good too. It is a lovely venue, with a small garden area containing the same vines that are grown on the main estate. Our guide explained about the differences in the grape types & their skins. The tour took in modern and traditional wine making methods and visiting the older part of the winery where the amphorae are stored was both interesting and atmospheric. In the wine tasting area great care had been taken to ensure COVID-19 guidelines were adhered to but it was done in such a way to not interfere with our enjoyment of the experience. Our guide was very knowledgeable, she was very easy to talk with and she answered all our questions very well. As for the wine, I have not found wines from the José de Souza winery in the UK which is regrettable however, all the more reason to return because they were all very, very good and different to each other from easy drinkers to one's deserving of fine dining.

Very informative tour of the wine production facilities, with the highlight being the very labour intensive processes around the production of wine in magnificent clay pots. Also viewed a prehistoric menir brought to the facility from the nearby vineyard and repositioned. Tasted three good red wines and bought some bottles of the best two. Overall a good experience but felt the €20 euro charge per person a little high

I came here with a group of friends to taste some wine however we got so much more!
They showed us around and taught us about how the wine is made, including their traditional clay pot wine.
The woman was excellent. Very friendly and knew a lot about everything.
Wine tasted superb too and not badly priced.
Highly recommend !

It is one of the best adegas in the Alentejo region. We've visited twice (spring and autumn). Our tourguide Lígia showed us around the Adega with a lot of enthousiasm en knowledge. Afterwards we've had a tasting of beautiful wines from the Adega. I would recommend it a lot! (Easy to find in the small city of Reguengos de Monsaraz)

We would highly recommend a visit to this winery. Absolutely fascinating to learn and appreciate wine made in this manner. After all, it is how the Greeks and Romans made and stored their wine. We thoroughly enjoyed the light meal, the wine, and our guide. Of particular interest, it was >102F outside and quite comfortable in their cellars.

Fantastic experience in an unique and secular winery in Alentejo. I booked for the same day and had a tour for just myself and my girlfriend. It's a big and historic winery where you can feel the real soul of the portuguese wine. It's not only about the wine itself but to get to know about history. I had a chance to see the bottles which were from 1949 found buried somewhere in there and were probably hidden during the war. The guide was great and spoke a perfect english, so if you are not a portuguese speaker I highly recommend it. Overall, an memorable experience.
