Lovely small fishing village with a sprinkle of little coves and beaches to explore. Go in the evening to catch the beautiful sunset and play amongst the sea sunken former ruins and enjoy dinner at the Benedictian restaurant at the base of the abbey. Worth a visit and welcome retreat from the busy main Polignano a mare town.

We walked from Polignano a Mare to San Vito - great walk along the coast. The abbey is really quite impressive but it was sadly not open to the public. It would have been good while we were there to have been able to get hold of some information on its history but there was nothing available which was disappointing. Definitely worth the walk though, and we had a beer in the attached restaurant bar while admiring the building :)

Very quiet place where you can see the small marina with all the old boat and the fischermen work. Near there there is a good restaurant called "Giselda" whit sea view.

San Vito is the patron saint of Polignano a Mare and he features in a legend about the founding of this abbey. The town was once very prosperous and the monks turned this place into a pilgrimage destination. The church doors show marks from Turkish attacks as well as attempts to defend the building from the sea. Part of it is now a private home and so is closed apart from Sundays when the church is opened to enable the locals to worship there.

A lovely little fishing village just a few kms up the coast from the bustle of nearby Polignano. It was a Friday afternoon and it was fairly obvious that this village and the several eateries there, was where the locals had come to escape the more crowded and touristy town of Polignano a Mare. Unfortunately we didn't have time to try out the food on offer here (the fish should be fresh at least!), but we did enjoy a short walk along the boardwalk beside the sea, and tried to imagine what it must been like to live in the Abbey, which now houses private apartments.

After spending most of the day in the nearby Polignano we drove to see this small cove with its little fishing boats bobbing about in the water overlooked by the towering ancient Abbey.
It’s something that we’d never seen before, a huge abbey so close to the waters edge....it’s perfect for photography.
A pity the Abbey couldn’t be restored in some way because it seemed just to be falling into disrepair.
The tiny beach had just a couple of bars/restaurants & there seemed to be a boat tours available from quay.
Worth a stop if you are in the vicinity of Polignano.

We were driving from Bari to Martina Franca and took a short detour to Abbazia di San Vito. It was worth the effort. The Abbey is very unusual but unfortunately is in private hands and cannot be visited. The small harbour was full of fishing boats and a number of swimmers. There is a small cafe for a hot or cold drink.

On a little natural harbor, where the remains of a young martyr were carried, a Benedictine structure with remakes up to XVIII century. During Sunday Mass is possible to visit the old Chapel.

Gorgeous religious building with connection to the church surrounded by buildings forming around the walls. Unfortunately, sightseeing impossible inside, the building is private.

We wandered around the Abbey & there is quite a bit of history around it , but only religious events & people that are invited to attend are allowed inside . It must have been very powerful back in the day ,
