The church of Santa Maria in Strada stands on an ancient convent of the Franciscan Friars called "of Penitence", which allowed it to be converted into an oratory in 1348.
The name of the church derives from the fact that the building was on the main road that led from Monza to Milan, called precisely the "Road" .
Attached to the church is a small cloister.
In then 14th century, the Franciscan friars built a new church on the site of an old ruined oratory, followed by the Franciscan monastery The church was enlarged and embellished in in the early 15th century with the addition of the choir, the sacristy and the bell tower.
The church was altered and restored several times during the following centuries until it has got its current appearance.
The brick façade is rich in geometric elements and decorations.
The bell tower, on the right looking at the façade, originally as high as the facade, is decorated with mullioned windows, hanging arches and spiers.
The interior of the church is divided into a large rectangular hall, the semi-octagonal choir and the presbytery. The secondary altars, on the sides of the Church, are decorated with frescoes,
The 18th century High Altar consists of marble, hard stones and bronzes.
Of particular value are the frescos of the presbytery and the choir.
Admission is free, although a (small) donation will always be appreciated.

This church is one in a dozen you can find in Monza and around.
It is beautiful but not worth a detour when not in the area.

This is one of the best churches in Monza after the Duomo.
Its facade is beautiful while internally one can feel a wonderful sense of peace and adoration.

Beautiful red brick church located in the historic center of Monza, with white statues, average interior, much better from the outside
