- lee13ondMontreal, Canada21 contributionsA relaxing must see beachThis a must see beach in Crete. Truely the Hollywood Greek experience with small fishing boats and a village that follows the cove. The beach is rocky so where your water shoes but the water is crystal clear and. You can snorkel or go diving. A beach chair will cost 5€ but one of the many tavernas that surround the area will serve you food and drink right on the waterfront. This is a great way to laze away an afternoon in the Mediterranean sun.Traveled as a coupleWritten May 20, 2022
- AfricaAtNewYearsIsland of Malta, Malta376 contributionsPros and ConsThis beach is bounded by a pair of ***** hotels. In between are quite a few tavernas, some convenience stores (supermarkets), a nightclub and some small, higher-end accommodations. The beach has some sand that seems to be covering rocks of various sizes. There’s a lifeguard stand, a dive center, umbrellas and sun beds for rent (20€), and really no restrooms. The parking lots becomes very crowded as does the beach itself with cars parked every which way and non-paying beach goers with their own stuff crowding out the walkways and space of those that pay. Beach maintenance is pretty good with cleanups happening each evening and sporadically during the day. Winds and tides alter the ratios of rocks to sand and it’s not unusual for the front-most umbrellas and sun beds to be washed by the sea. Snorkeling is better on the side next to the Castillo resort, where there’s a shower and changing booth, but there are mostly just small fish and crabs during midday. Overall it’s a fairly good beach, particularly when there are fewer beach goers and it’s not too hot.Traveled as a coupleWritten July 20, 2021
- barneyantChester, United Kingdom22 contributionsPicture postcard beachI had never heard of this place when we booked to come but what a delightful surprise it was when we found this beach. The beach is backed by a long row of Taverna's and bars which just add to the overall feeling of a "real" Greek place. The people who have left negative reviews must have visited the wrong place as I couldnt say one bad word about it. The kids had never swam in the sea with Fish and they loved it.Written August 5, 2020

Our hotel manager advised us not to go, he said Agia Pelagia is nice just on internet comments, in reality is not worth the drive from Heraklion at all... but we didn't listen. The road from Heraklion was harder than we thought, a BIG advice for you all - if you're using Google Maps and driving from Heraklion to Agia Pelagia DON'T take the first option to slide right from the national road because you'll end up on an unpaved goat road! Take the next exit, drive a bit more down the main road and take the next exit, it's a lot more convenient and leads you to normal road.
When we finally descended to the beach (also, GMaps show that you can drive directly to the beach but in reality the road stops at the parking), we remembered our hotel manager and his words. It's a narrow, narrow, packed place, full of kids, families, kids toys on the beach and in the water, even the rubber castle for jumping in the water, above it all. It looked like a dirty little place, nothing like on the photos. Well, on the photos it is clear that the beach is narrow, we should've looked better, but in reality it's even more obvious. On top of that, taverna tables are so close to the sunbeds and people are having lunch one meter from another man's towel and slippers... just... inappropriate, especially in Covid era with social "distance".
Don't waste your time, it's a village, nothing special village, and a village-like beach full of yelling and screaming kids packed like sardines on the beach. Go to Bali instead, it's not far away!

We visited this beach in August, so expected it to be very busy and it certainly was! It is particularly busy at the weekends due to the locals using it more.
The beach is very narrow, only allowing two rows of sunbeds along most of it, some parts only one row. Some of the sunbeds are almost in the sea! We didn't find this to be a problem, it only adds to the character of this little beach.
The beach is cleaned daily and there are plenty of bins around, there aren't any toilets on the beach but plenty of restaurants very close, so you just need to buy a drink to use their facilities. The beach has an active lifeguard and a popular diving centre as well as boat hire. 2 sunbeds with a parasol with set you back 7euros for the whole day.
We enjoyed our days on this beach and would recommend it if staying in the area.

Agia Pelagia has a lovely enclosed bay with plenty of restaurants situated just steps from the beach. The sea was stunning, although it went deep very quickly so this could be dangerous for young children. The beach is a fine stone/sandy beach, but there are quite a few rocks at the waters edge. Sunbeds were chargeable but very comfortable. The beach got very busy at the weekends, but there was usually a pair of sunbeds available during the week at most times of the day in June.
The choice of restaurants and bars was brilliant, all situated along the beach front. I would go there again, but not for two weeks.

It was a very beautiful beach, actually the most beautiful beach that is close to the Heraklion city. I didn t expected to be that beautiful, so it was a nice surprize for me when i saw it for the first time. I really enjoyed the view. Hope to return there some day.

Been here several times and fallen in love with Agia Pelagia. Beautiful place with warm blue seas and the generosity of the Greek people. Great place to visit for couples and families. Fresh seafood and traditional dishes.

Love this beach. Great for kids, lots of good restaurants to eat at and things to do nearby. Go early if you want a spot during busy seasons. We like the sand on the far end near the cliff!

Hi
Thinking of visiting Agia Pelagia Crete this September, I was wondering what is the place like, are there plenty shops, taverns etc? Does it have a sandy or pebble beach?
We have been to Gouves to Aphrodite Beach a number of times and love Crete, the people are so easy going.
Any information on Agia Pelagia will be appreciated
Many thanks

I can not give 5 starts as it is difficult to access by car if you are not staying in a nearby hotel. The beach is lovely (beautiful clean turquoise water) but not much space to sunbathe.

Hi, Jannis. The first few meters of the beach at Agia Pelagia is fine sand. After this, fine pebbles, and then larger pebbles. The beach is very child-friendly, mainly because it is a protected bay, unlike many north Crete beaches. The sea here is always calm. Bali Beach, farther to the west, is another good choice for small kids. There are so many beaches here on Crete, difficult to advise in the small space provided. Bottom line, you and your wonderful child will always remember Agia Pelagia. Hope this helps.

On the beach, there are a dozen or more bars, and about twice as many cafes, restaurants, and tavernas. There are also several of each up the hillsides to the main road. Almyra is my choice, right on the beach, impeccable food, amazing drinks, classy like a Bond flick. The staff waits on you under your umbrella or on the terrace or patio. There are several other in this class and everything in between. Other choices depend on where you are staying. Lygaria Beach may actually be closer if you are at the top of the hill. Hope this helped.

There are always taxi transfers going on in Agia Pelagia or at nearby resorts. Ask any shop owner or other vendor and they will be happy to call a taxi for you.

"Greek coasts are, according to the Greek constitution, a public good and not for one person or company to exploit. There are no private beaches in Greece." Is it true?
"Even if a hotel is situated right on the beach, it is obliged toward let beachgoers visit for free even if the only access to the beach is through the hotel." Anybody has information about the beach off the Out of the Blue?

The beach just off the hotel and there is public access. You can get to the Blue Lagoon though the path is not obvious and you have to ask when you are there. Have fun!

Yes there is a bus service into Herkalion around 3 times a day from Agia Pelagia- we found the most useful one was at 9.40 am
More frequent buses are from the main road around 2 miles away.
