I have the same remarks as for the Ludwig II museum: no English anywhere! Why? With so many tourists from all around the world?!
As for the exhibition, the one of Julius Exter is excellent, it by itself was worth the visit to the Herreninsel!

My advice is to visit the monastery before the palace, otherwise you will be disappointed by it. The things I found interesting were a room were Ludwig II stayed and a very decorated room. I entered without a guided tour - im not sure if they offer them at all. The displays show WW2 stuff.

If you are visiting Herrenchimsee the Abbey on the second island in the Chimsee Lake is a must visit. It is home to an Abbey originally established in 765. The island also offers great cafes and a wonderful place to walk through streets and homes that take you back in time.

Included with the Schloss herrenchiemsee ticket but barely with the walkthrough. Displays aren't really related to the monastery

We did not have time for a tour of the place but enjoyed walking around it and enjoying the peaceful gardens. If I could do it over, I would have taken the tour!

Interesting place although more info could be provided in english on the displays. These premises were used after WW2 to sort out the government of the then West Germany. Intetrsting modern history.

I had never heard of Exter before visiting Hereninsel. There is a large collection of his work in the old castle/monestery.
It is well worth a visit.

Tour the monastery if you have about 45 minutes before your tour of the castle. The special exhibit was beautiful.

If you've driven to Chiemse Lake, took the Ferry (Schifffahrt) at Prien Am Chiemse to the 1st island to visit King Ludwig II Herrenchiemsee Palace,
Then it would be a pity to limit yourself just to the Palace.
The island itself is beautiful and if you make some more time to visit it you'll find this beautiful Monastery.
The surroundings on your way to reach it are beautiful and it is not a long walk at all.
The roses in the inside court are enchanting and the atmosphere is absolutely relaxing.
You'll continue then walking to the Palace itself and you'll have the chance to see more of what this Island has to offer.

Try to make enough time forthe whole island and then continue to the next island: Fraueninsel which is also absolutely beautiful.
The whole fare from Prien to the 2 islands and back will cost around 12 Euros.
You can also take the full ride for the 3 islands but you'll need to make more time.

I have posted reviews and pictures of these sites, I hope they'll help convince taking the time to be there...

Not a place I enjoyed too much. Not very well marked. We raced through as we had 45 mins before the castle tour so we didnt get an audio guide.
Lots of artwork here, but again, not my favourite pasttime.
Some beautiful rooms inside- 1 or 2. If you have time to dawdle, then go for it otherwise its ok to skip. Included in castle ticket- rather walk awhile in the gardens and surrounds and enjoy the scenery.
