Nice visit to the semaphore of Pointe Saint-Gildas, located in Préfailles. Possibility to visit a free temporary exhibition and another paid permanent exhibition. The permanent exhibition traces the history of the semaphore, explains the status of the lighthouse keeper and lists the various shipwrecks off Pointe Saint-Gildas. Very interesting visit.

Visited to try and continue researching the sinking of Lancastria. My father was on board when whe was sunk, a month before my birth, yet I knew nothing of him or how died until about one year ago.
Stephan was very helpful but the weather was so bad that it was impossible to see off shore towards the wreck. - we will be in the area for a few more days and hope to return.
The rest of the museum will be of interest to anyone who has done any sailing, as we have.
Very good value.

The Semaphore wouldn't be my first choice as an attraction but it was interesting. You are greeted with a smile and plenty of info from Elizabeth on the welcome desk. It costs 4 euros and 3 for the children. Opening times 10-1pm and 2.30-6pm. Everything is in French but you are given an English guide - if needed. The views from the top are impressive and maybe you could be luck like us - we spotted a Hoopoe, male Pied Flycatcher, Linnets, Stonechats and more while there.

Free temporary exhibition (permanent for a fee) on pop pop boats (200 scale models exhibited, of French, American, German and Japanese origin in particular), invented by the French Thomas PIOT in 1891 (patent on a steam boiler) and completed by a patent concerning the addition of a flexible membrane on the body of the boiler that generates the characteristic pop pop noise.

Once a place of battle and barbaric incursions, it is now a highly touristic place with nearly half a million visitors a year!
Pointe Saint-Gildas is one of the most visited outdoor sites in the department and its use continues to grow.
