Lovely stained glass windows by Alfred Manessier
May 2019
We first saw Alfred Manessier's stained glass windows at the Église Saint-Sépulcre in Abbeville and thought they were magnificent. The windows at the Église Saint-Bénigne are lovely, although - for us - somewhat lacking in the same 'wow' factor as Église Saint-Sépulcre.

In the church, there is an information board (in French), which explains what Manessier sought to convey through his 'Symphony of Easter' windows. For the benefit of non-French speakers, and to better appreciate the message of the windows, a rough translation follows.

The blue and yellow tones and the vertical lines in the Chapel of the Baptistery recall baptismal water and light, whilst the green tones in the Chapel of the Sacrament represent infancy and the yellow tones, adulthood.

The dusky blue tones represent autumn and winter, and are contrasted with red tones, symbolising the presence of God at every instant of our lives. In the Chapel of the Gisant (tomb effigies), the muted tones and horizontal lines represent death, whilst the lively and lovely colours of the rose window represent the joy of Easter.

There is also a beautiful 15th century polychrome wooden statue of the Virgin and Child known as Virgin of Lausanne (unfortunately the Child is missing) and a Black Madonna and Child known as Our Lady of the Hermits or Our Lady of Einsiedeln (1690), which unbelievably we forgot to photograph. In the Chapel of the Baptistery, there is also a beautiful copper baptismal font and covering lid, with a handle in the form of a fish (unfortunately we couldn't find out who made it).

We believe free guided tours may be available for groups by contacting the Office de Tourisme at 14 Bis Rue de la Gare or on Tel: 03 81 46 48 33
