Great tour with the best guide, for everyone not just bird lovers
Apr 2021 • Couples
We have never met a guide with such a huge knowledge of the rainforest and its inhabitants as Fernando. He even showed us the methods on how to get the best pictures on the mobile phones. At the end of the tour he sent us a list of all the birds we had seen including pictures and their names in German.

Great birdwatching tour
Feb 2020 • Family
We enjoyed our tour on the private reserve. It was a bit long for some of our family but our guide really wanted to show us certain birds including the antpita. After the tour you go for a home made breakfast, which was delicious!

Delightful birding AND cultural exchange
Jan 2020
My wife and I along with another couple met with guide Ronnie in the pre-dawn fog. Ronnie's family has owned a couple hundred acres in the hills outside Uvita for many decades. Originally it was a working farm but more recently Ronnie's family have granted a conservation easement on the property to preserve this special place for future generations.

Having grown up in this forest, Ronnie knows it and the birds like the back of his hand. We birded along the road for a bit and then took a trail into the forest. We found our target bird, the golden naped woodpecker, right away. They seem to be quite common in these woods. The forest was filled with other great birds such as white crowned and red lored parrots, slaty tailed and gartered trogans, woodcreepers, toucans, etc. The highlights included a common pauraque sitting on a nest and a streak chested antpitta which Ronnie whistled in from across the forest. He must have some connection with the antpitta because it followed us down the trail for some time.

After the 3+ hour hike we followed Ronnie in our car for a short trip to his house for a typical CR breakfast. Ronnie's house is something to behold, situated on the side of a the hill overlooking the pacific with the whale-tail of marina ballena in full view. While Ronnie's wife cooked us breakfast we were treated by his 16 year old daughter singing and playing the ukele and guitar for us. She has quite a talent.

To cap off the experience, as we were saying our goodbyes in the driveway, a laughing falcon across the street at eye level suddenly announced himself by launching into his raucous laugh. It was a thoroughly enjoyable morning.

A total experience!
Jan 2020
We went out birding with Ronnie and had a delightful time. He is very skilled at identifying birds and very patient about finding the birds which we hear. I had plenty of time to take photographs and we enjoyed observing the behavior of each bird. We saw everything from Costa Rican swifts to the beautiful Streak-chested Antpitta singing its haunting song on the forest floor.
We saw Trogons, parrots, Tityra, woodpeckers, wrens, manakins, currasow, honeycreepers, euphonia, and so many more!
After several hours of birding we were led back to Ronnie's family's home where his wife cooked us the most delicious Costa Rican breakfast that we have ever eaten. The whole family was so gracious and welcoming and we had a delightful time visiting with them in their beautiful home with a sweeping view above the Whale's Tail.
We cherished our time with Ronnie and family. This is an experience you will not regret!

Great birdwatching tour

We very much enjoyed our tour at Oro Verde today. Our guide was able to locate many birds in his spotting scope and helped with “digi-scoping” photography. We also saw a couple of impressive birds’ nests. The home cooked breakfast was a real treat.

Excellent birdwatching experience
Feb 2019 • Family
This tour exceeded our expectations. We saw about 35 different species of birds, including Baird's and Gartered Trogon, Streak-chested Antpitta, White-crested Coquette and Great Curassow. Ronnie's land includes a variety of habitats, including some amazing first growth forest.

We are casual birdwatchers and we found that Ronnie was so helpful in finding birds and identifying them. (Rather than us spending the whole time looking at the guide book and still not figuring out what the bird was!) It was great to go to his house for a lovely breakfast afterwards. We recommend this tour highly.

Fantastic tour

Tour for real birders. Ronnie has scope, laser pointer, Cornel U app with bird calls for calling in birds. He's excellent at what he does. We had a great time with him, breakfast was delicious, his family was lovely and his home beautiful. We saw trogon, currasow, caracara, streakbreasted antpita, many more and learned a lot. Ronnie's English is not bad. His love for birds and his country's wildlife is very evident. Thank you Ronnie for a wonderful memorable morning.

Amazing birding and local experience!!
Jan 2019 • Friends
I came to Costa Rica on a mother/daughter trip and we all love birds, but are not avid birders. We did one of Ronny’s bird watching tours and all had an incredible time. Ronny and his coworker were both very knowledgeable, patient and went above and beyond to make sure everybody was enjoying themselves and could see all the birds we spotted. We ended up seeing over 30 different bird species and learned about the land and the local ecosystem. After birding, Ronny brought us to his beautiful home next to where we parked and offered us a local Costa Rican breakfast prepared by his family. We ate an amazing breakfast while looking out to the ocean. Then his beautiful children came out and played us music with guitars, songs and gymnastics.

Overall, it was the best cultural experience we had all week. Well worth the money and waking up early to experience it all!

So many birds
Mar 2018 • Friends
Early morning bird hike with Ronnie Duarte at Oro Verde. A birding friend was visiting us and we called Ronnie to book a morning hike on his families 350 acre reserve. The hike was about 4 hours and we saw over 30 varieties of native Costa Rican aviary, including the rare Anpita! The reserve is beautiful with nicely maintained trails and not steep. Ronnie grew up on this finca and was very knowledgeable about the wildlife and the history of the area. His English is very good. After the hike, Ronnie invited us to his home down the road for breakfast and an amazing view of Costa Ballena. This $35/pp hike is totally worth it.

Memorable moring

We had been traveling on the road to Oro Verde, and on our way back stopped to take a picture of the Whale's Tale on a bluff over looking the ocean. A car stopped, and the driver asked if everything was OK, which led to a conversation about the area. The driver was Ronny Fonseca, the owner and operator of Oro Verde. We didn't know about Oro Verde, but after speaking with Ronny, we booked a tour for later in the week. It turned out to be a highlight of our 10 days in Costa Rica. Ronny was unable to lead our Tuesday tour, as he teaches school in Uvita, but he works with a second guide who led the tour for my wife and I. We saw lots of birds, some mammals, and learned a lot about the property and its history as a family farm, and the efforts of Ronny's family to restore and preserve the jungle. After the hike, we were met by Ronny's wife who cooked us a traditional Tico breakfast. We were thrilled with our experience.
