We are residents of Costa Rica and have done many Chocolate Tours and we loved Ronald Alpizar's Pre-Colombian Chocolate Tour. Just getting to his place is an adventure on winding, narrow dirt roads up a mountain. Upon arriving you will be met by a sincere agriculture expert, don Ronald, ready to explain how chocolate bars are made starting with the tree sapling. Don Ronald knows so much about agriculture that we got an education on many counts. He also had us all doing each step of the process from roasting the beans on an open fire, to grinding them on a
Pre-Colombian stone, to whisking the ground chocolate into boiling milk. We were then each given steamy unsweetened hot chocolate for the full experience. Delicious! As a bonus, don Ronald surprised us by taking photos of us as we worked through this process and then sent the photos to us. We also walked through his farm to see cacao trees and where the beans are dried. This tour was well worth the cost and you won't find a more friendly and informative guide than don Ronald Alpizar.
