Nicoya Surf & SUP operates amazing learn to surf lessons, surf school and surf adventures in Santa Teresa, Playa Hermosa and Montezuma. We provide our services for beginners and intermediate surfers who want to learn how to surf or improve their surfing in a fun and safe environment. Nicoya Surf & SUP will introduce you to some of the best learn to surf, SUP lessons and intermediate waves in the area. Each day our local surf & SUP instructors will take you to the best surf & SUP locations according to your ability and help you understand the surf conditions, locations, local cultures, customs and others things to know around the Nicoya Peninsula. Guillermo is my new favorite person. Back at my office desk in LA, if I need to relax I close my eyes and picture the jungle, turquoise water and warm surf of Montezuma. No words. I'm still debating leaving my life to run away and become a surf bum... Guillermo was more like a surf therapist/guru than an instructor. I feel like I came away with life lessons from his wisdom-- but such is the way with surf and anything whereby we respect the ocean and mother nature. Anyone who wants to seep themselves in an indescribably magical Costa Rican experience should do a private with Guillermo. There were monkeys. And fresh coconuts.

Our family of 4 spent a month in Montezuma and over that time took around 10 lessons with Guillermo and his assistant Jaro. Their expertise, knowledge, humour and ability to make you immediately feel comfortable (I was very nervous) were apparent from the start.
The first time we made the hike to Playa Grande we knew it was going to be a special experience. The surf shack is in the jungle surrounded by massive mango trees and howler monkeys, and the beach is pristine and uncrowded. We spent several lessons here in the white wash, then rented boards by ourselves prior to graduating to the point break in Cabuya. Over the course of the month, we went from complete novices to (occasionally) being able to catch waves on our own, all while learning about Costa Rican politics, surfing philosophy, and wave physics. It was so cool to learn a new sport as a family, and we also feel like we made a new friend. Thanks so much Guillermo!

No words can express how grateful I am for Guillermo! He is an AMAZING instructor, always positive, energetic, and most importantly, gives accurate and extremely useful corrections. In a matter of weeks, I went from being scared to get onto a board to paddling out and catching waves on my own. He was able to help me get over both physical and mental barriers that I had put up after having a few bad surf experiences. On the very first class, Guillermo identified some bad habits I had previously formed and we immediately worked together to fix them.
The small class sizes allow for individual attention and ensure that by the end of every lesson you have learned & accomplished something new. Guillermo is always willing to answer any questions you might have and constantly gives encouragement, no matter how big or small the win.
As I continue to travel, I have taken other surf lessons along the pacific coast and nothing comes near the quality of teaching from Nicoya Surf & SUP. You can tell that Guillermo has a passion for what he’s doing, and it is portrayed through his lessons. I can’t wait to come back, thanks for everything!

We were a group of three in Guillermo's surf lesson at Playa Grande. Best lesson we've ever had.
We were all experienced beginners and learned a lot of great tips, safety and protocol right from the start. Prompt communication and professional helpers for the lesson exceeded our expectations.
I wish we had known before hand that we needed to walk (without boards) about 20 min and that there would be a locked bodega - we could've brought a few things if we had known there was a place to lock phones and yeti's. Minor detail but handy for others to know.
Progressed lots, detailed individual feedback, and a fabulous experience for both the 16 year olds and 40 something both :-)
If you haven't yet been convinced as to what a great guy Guillermo is, to top it all off he even ensured we got a forgotten t-shirt back while we were still in the area.

I took two surf lessons with Guillermo on Playa Grande in Montezuma. Great experience. Nice teacher, explains the basics and safety rules which is really nice. Also he gives great advice about my techniques. I was able to improve my surfing. Guillermo is a fun guy with a lot of humor.
It’s a 30 min walk to the beach, but very very nice! Nice beaches and beautiful nature on the way to the beach. In my opinion, that’s an extra treat that comes with the surf lesson.

I took a couple of lessons with Guillermo and had an amazing time! We laughed a lot but safety was his number one priority. It was Guillermo's goal that I improve so he always gave me something to work on. I would definitively come again!

Guillermo does a great job making sure you have a good surf experience. He has a good selection of surf boards to chose from. He picks you up at your hotel with all the equipment needed and a refreshment after the surf session. I would highly recommend him due to his many past years of experience. He can also set you up with reservations at the local resorts.

A few friends and I stayed at a hostel in Montezuma, where Guillermo was hired to take us out surfing. The first week, we had a group of about 6, all at different levels. Guillermo was great at explaining the basics of the ocean, safety, and skill to the group. He was very hands on with everyone, giving each person the individual attention they needed to improve. We would either hike or drive to a surf destination each morning, according to the tides.
The second week of my stay I had Guillermo to myself. This was the best week! He would drive me and my friend (who was able to sunbathe while I surfed) to a bunch of different surf destinations in the area. I had been surfing for at least ten years prior to meeting Guillermo, but he was able to help me improve all my skills and confidence in the water. I have continued to surf and travel to do so after my great experience. Thanks to Guillermo I am one of the better surfers out in the water here in NJ.
I would highly recommend anyone, beginner up to novice, to hire Guillermo to show you the ropes in Costa Rica. (Not to mention he keeps you smiling the whole time!)

I wanted to have a try at surfing during my stay in Costa Rica with my friend. Our hostel booked with Guillermo, saying he would be a great instructor, and they were right! He came to pick us up at the hostel and had all the gear ready, including water and snacks! He was very friendly and even gave us a tour on the drive, explaining the country-side.
Once we started our lessons, Guillermo never gave up on us until we all stood at least once! He was very encouraging and did a great job of pointing out what we needed to fix and how. I have recommended him to other friends and still tell others about my great experience!
