You see fantastic scenery as your driving through this part of Africa at eye level, you don't appreciate how vast it is though until you see if from above. Long Tom pass gave us fantastic views, truly amazing.

We went through lots of mist in places, which made some of the journey a little wary. It was patchy though and good to look back on to see where we'd been.

We'd travelled from Sabie to Lydenburg. The road out of Lydenburg was terrible miles of pot holes.

I have driven this pass several times in different weather and every time it is stunning. With clouds descending around you it feels you are in another world and the views on a clear day are unparalleled, so you can't go wrong. Sometimes it is difficult if a slow truck is in front but take your time and don't be in a hurry to pass.

We experienced very thick mist and rain at about seven in the morning. What made the trip scary was the condition of the road and all the heavy trucks using it.
at places the road is full of bumps, not always easy to see as the trucks damaged the road, and other places pot holes. Lydenburg's the town's roads are very badly damaged because of all the trucks travelling through the town. Why doesn't the mining owners take up their responsibility and maintain the roads their trucks are using. We took another route home, and avoided Long Tom Pass. We are standing with you Lydenburg!

I rode through Lydenburg (Mashishing) from Dullstroom through to Sabie and was dismayed at the unbelievable condition of the roads in and through Lydenburg and along the Long Tom Pass route. Please avoid this area unless you are riding in a 4-wheel drive vehicle and are prepared to waste time negotiating terrible road surfaces, potholes and trucks (responsible for the carnage). The lack of maintenace is quite apparent as is the apathetic approach of the municipality (even if they exist)!

3 years after our first visit to South-Afrika we passed again through Long Tom Pass and again we were stunned by the views and landscapes. We even recognised the place we had a pick-nick then. When you are around in the area it is really a place you should go.

Long Tom Pass between Sabie and Lydenburg is one of the most beautiful passes in South Africa. There are two places where you can safely alight from your vehicle to enjoy the breathtaking view on a clear day.

If you are adventurous and very fit you can run the Long Tom Marathon which is run annually from Sabie to Lydenburg over a distance of 56 kilometers.

This pass played a critical part of the history of the area. The engineering to build this Pass is amazing. The road has beautiful vistas and several, sites to visit along the way.
