About
The St Peter's Village Tour offers four free award winning guided walks around the historic village and churchyard of St Peter's, Broadstairs in Kent. The Tours are arranged by a team of 110 volunteers.During the walking tour with your guide, you will meet many costumed characters from past centuries. You will see the flint built church and find out a little more about its long history. You will hear of conditions in the workhouse, the Newbolts breakfast concerts for hundreds of fashionable people, the tower used in the Napoleonic wars, famous (and infamous) local residents and our ancient seat of local government for the area. The tour is conducted in groups of around ten and covers less than a mile of flat walking, but does involve standing for a number of 5 minute presentations. It includes a break for tea or coffee (although no break on evening tours, or wet weather tours). You are advised to allow two and a half hours for your tour. In very wet weather we provide an Inclement weather Routine. Access for visitors with disabilities. Children are very welcome on our tour. We would however, suggest a minimum age of 10 years to fully appreciate the experience. At the end of the tour you are invited to contribute towards our costs which average £4 per adult. Here at the St Peter's Village Tour we appreciate any comments you may have with regard to any of our tours and our website. We are Supported by the Broadstairs and St. Peter's Town Council and we are member of the Broadstairs Tourism and Leisure Association.

Wonderful sunny afternoon spent wandering around St Peters meeting local characters from the past. As the last tour of the season it was extremely popular.
The tour was well organised from the online booking system, characters performances, refreshment break halfway round and the opportunity at the end to meet the organisers and ask questions.
Some people had travelled quite a distance to attend the tour, from Ashford and London, others were locals like myself who had heard of the tour but never been before.
It is definitely something I will consider bringing visitors to in the future. I saw parts of St Peters I never knew existed and learnt lots of interesting facts.
All of the characters played their parts well and I particularly enjoyed the banter between the three in the stocks, very funny!
I would definitely recommend the tour to locals and visitors.

I was pleasantly surprised about how good this tour was. As well as being informative, the characters dotted around the route were brilliant in bringing the history to life. I particularly liked the first couple in the church and the school mistress.

At the beginning of the tour I told our tour guide that we were on the tour as it was my sisters birthday. So a lovely touch half way through the tour, was that she had a surprise happy birthday sang to her. It really made my sisters day.

Considering that this is run by volunteers it is so well organised and is a wonderful asset to the village. It wasn't rushed at all and it was charming throughout.

I totally recommend the tour for adults, but I think my 10 year old daughter would have got bored around half way round, as it is a good 2.5 - 3 hours long. Fabulous none the less, and I will be telling all my friends to pop along.

Thank you for a wonderful afternoon. 💛

On July 15th I had the privilege of going on the St Peter's Village Tour. I had heard about this, but it was so much better than anything I could have imagined! This was largely owing perhaps to three things: the village is genuinely a place of real historical interest, each group has its personal guide who is knowledgeable and opens it up for you, and (best of all) as you go you are met by historical characters in costume who tell you about the places in which you are standing, spanning the centuries - the 'vignettes' described in other reviews. These are enormously effective because the actors engage with you, refuse to 'come out of character' (even when pressed!) and the costumes, professionally made, are their own, and look it. It is believable, professional, and first-rate: a must, for example, for American tourists who are interested in history as it was lived by their own English forbears. Highly recommended and enormously good value!

A remarkable tour of a village bringing the past to life though an excellent team of enthusiastic of volunteers playing characters from times gone by. It relies on voluntary donations. Takes about 2 hours of easy walking.

As this was published in Winter 2020 we thank John Reid60 for this response which does not seem to refer to an actual visit date. As we can see it would not be until 22nd July 2021 at the end of lock-down when an actual experience of the tour could be recorded. The St Peter--in-Thanet Village Tour s now officially in its twenty seventh year.

Initially thought that 2 and a half hours would be much to long. At the end of 3 hours could have happily have gone on for longer. Really well organised and led afternoon tour. Introduced to the historical figures through the ages with each giving us an insight into life in St Peters. All the characters were great and could happily have stayed with each for much longer but the 5 to 10 minute stops kept us briskly moving along. Lyn was a great local guide and ensured we had a very pleasant afternoon. Would thoroughly recommend it.

A very fascinating couple of hours spent going back in time in St. Peter’s Church and Village. The whole Tour is organised and presented by volunteers in period costume - even Queen Victoria was there making one of her occasional appearances. See the White Ensign fluttering from the top of the church tower, throw a few knitted cabbages at the poor miscreants in the stocks, and wander around in the village itself with its fascinating history. Really recommended for a different sort of experience but pre booking is essential.

Great tour of the town. Really well thought out and presented. The volunteers who run this have gathered together interesting material on various sites in the town and have then put together a series of mini-plays by volunteer costumed characters to present the information in an enjoyable and interesting way. So much more to it than the simple presentation of facts/stories which keeps everyone engaged throughout.

Excellent tour of local history ran by a wonderful team of volunteers. Sue our guide was very knowledgeable and it was amazing to discover the history behind buildings you pass every day. The costumed characters were wonderful and bought the history alive. I would thoroughly recommend this tour and think it’s something all local school children should be taken on.

Dear Wendyc and party who visited us on July 31st The Village Tour Management , guides and costumed characters very much appreciate your favourable comments, on your recent visit to us Also to know that although you are locally based you were un-aware of the historical significance of this village. Many locals have remarked in similar vein, in that they knew little about a history that vistors from overseas have been introduced to for now over twentiy-eight seasons. We hope that you will visit us in the future and bring more of your friends and spread the word.. With our very best wishes and thanks. 6th August 2022

Fascinating and fun afternoon

What a surprising and enjoyable afternoon we had at the St Peter's Village Tour, which takes place every Thursday afternoon throughout the summer.

Do go, if you haven't been before! It's great fun, hugely informative and jam packed with unexpected facts and characters about Broadstairs' neighbouring village. St Peter's started life over 1000 years ago and was the main settlement in the area until the 19th Century.

The tour is run by an independent group of 120 volunteers. You'll meet some of them in costume as you explore the stories of this fascinating place and learn about the people and events which have shaped it over the years.

There's even a nicely produced little booklet you can purchase for just £2.50, on top of the tour donation of £5 (refreshments at the halfway point are £2 extra)

All in all a great afternoon out

Very interesting and enjoyable. Local history brought to life buy a team of talented volunteers which take you through you the history of the village from the first settlement by the Jutes around 450ad to the 20th century. This all done with many characters appearing in period costume. We were a group of around 26 from a local travel club (Silver Phoenix Travel Club) and were divided into subgroups of 8 for the tour which worked very well. Thoroughly enjoyed by everone
