Wine, food, art, nature, scenery. What a setting. Terralsole really is an amazing place. We did not stay in the guesthouse but I will definitely search it out for another trip to Tuscany. The wine tasting experience was so special. That Terralsole Brunello is my favorite. But it’s the winemaker/owners, Mario and Athena who elevate this wine tasting experience above all others. Really! You need a car to get here. If you find the Barbi estate just South of Montalcino just stay to the left down the little road til you get to the beautiful metal gate and drive through to the winery.

We found this little gem by asking at our first wine tasting of the day. I recommend making a reservation, but we didn't have one...they walked us around and let us sample their wines anyway. I highly recommend this place. Hard to find, but worth the gravel road. Once you get their, you're not going to want to leave. They also have a Villa you can rent on their property. If you like wine, you're going to like this place even more. Artisans for certain. Ask for Athena, great host.

My wife and I originally had our Terralsole visit booked in April, 2020, but COVID took care of that. So we contacted Athena (co-owner and wife of Mario) and asked if we could move it to June of this year (2022). Once confirmed, all we had to do was navigate our trip to Italy for our 3-week adventure. Before I get into too many details, let me start by saying that of all of our visits to Napa, France and Italy; our visit with Athena @ Terralsole was the best winery visit we've ever had the pleasure to experience.
The scenery is absolutely stunning, the wine is out of this world and their hospitality is unmatched, in my opinion. Mario and Athena's winery is their home; as with a lot of small to medium Italian wineries/vineyards. And our afternoon visit was something we will never forget. Athena not only took the time to get to know what we liked, she then took that information to match the wines we had a chance to taste, of course with Italian cheeses and Tuscan meat.
We then proceeded to venture upstairs where Athena cooked us an incredible true-Italian lunch (by the way - Athena is a fabulous cook and teaches cooking classes). We brought some of the wines we tasted in their gorgeous tasting room and had a wonderful Italian lunch/wine experience.
Brunello producers are proud of what they do and they should be! At the end of the day, most consider themselves farmers just as much as wine makers. Mario and Athena have created truly wonderful wines that are not only worthy of cellaring, but can be enjoyed now. We loved their wines before our visit and we even love them more now. Can't wait to place my next order. If you are going to be in Montalcino, you must make Terralsole a stop during your visit. Ciao.

A highlight of our trip! From the moment we arrived (greeted by the cellar master), our visit was nothing short of exceptional! Athena shared the history of the winery and their magnificent line up of Brunellos and blends. Loved every moment of our visit and absolutely recommend to others who are searching for that perfect gem! So glad we made this a part of our trip. Made our trip to Italy and Montalcino, one for the ages!

I’m so happy that my family and I experienced Terrasole. Mario and Athena are so warm and welcoming, and their dedication to the property and their wines is immediately apparent. The Brunellos di Montalcino were so superb that I shipped two cases home. We did not stay on the property, but I’m keeping their villa on my list for a future trip to Tuscany. I highly recommend that you visit for a cellar tour and wine tasting.

The estate is better than an art museum and a national park put together. Athena and Mario are the best host couple ever, and what backstories they have. They are warm and welcoming and amazing. The wines are excellent, too. (If you order they are sent promptly.) Do not miss trying Mario's special chair.

Best experience I have ever had on a wine tour. Mario is so accommodating, and wines are superb! Terralsole’s 04 Brunello is what started my love of Italian wines, and when my girlfriend and I showed up unannounced to visit the winery, it was the day before Mario’s sons wedding. While I would have completely understood if he turned us away as they were busy wth preparations and were closed, Mario invited us into his home, gave us a private tour of his gorgeous estate, opened multiple bottles, and spent well over an hour with us. I am a big wine fan and go on multiple tours every year and have visited well over 100 wineries, and have never had such a welcoming experience. His wines are truly world class!

Today we visited Terralsole, the home & winery of Mario & Athena Bollag. Finding Terralsole in the hills of Montalcino was not easy. Falling in love with their home & family was! They welcomed us into their home, even introducing us to a group of teen travelers as their friends. We felt like friends by the end of the afternoon. So warm, so accommodating. We swapped stories with their children, fed the goats, and shared a meal that was taught by Athena & prepared by the group. Of course, we were there to sample the exceptional organic Terrasole wines. Mario was such a great host and warm teacher to the young group. The amazing Brunello di Montacinos did not disappoint! You can feel Mario's commitment to quality in everything you find at Terrasole. Shipped a case of Terrasole Brunello back to the states to enjoy the wine and relive the memories when we return home. Thanks to Mario & Athena!

We had an amazing time at Terralsole. It is the perfect place use as home base when traveling throughout southern Tuscany. Athena and Mario are so hospitable. Breakfast and the cappuccino were delicious. The accommodations were lovely; it was casual and felt like we were staying in a friend's home. The property is gorgeous with incredible views. We participated in the cooking class and had a wonderful time learning and eating authentic Tuscan cuisine. And the wines produced at Terralsole by Athena and Mario are truly fantastic! Staying at Terralsole is like a home away from home. We cannot wait to stay there again!

We visited Terralsole in March this year with our 2 young children really not expecting to see or visit anything since the weather was still very cold, rainy and the vineyards had no leaves. We had been driving our RV for 2 months around Italy and decided we can't possibly drive pass Tuscany without stopping by a winery. We wanted to see the Tuscan countryside and complete our dream of sitting near a warm fireplace sipping Brunello, so we contacted a friend who highly recommended we visit Terralsole. We've tried one of Terralsole's wines before back in Hawaii so we were excited to visit vineyard. Thankfully, they were open so we headed to Montalcino.
It was winter and driving an RV through the mountains was a bit tough (it was foggy), but we made it after getting lost a few times (we blame it on the weather). In any case, we were warmly greeted by Mario, the Owner. Thankfully, he didn't mind our children (he has young ones of his own) and took us on a highly personalized tour of the winery and estate which is situated on a picturesque hillside. He explained how he started his winery and the history of Montalcino and its vineyards.
The kids were kept busy nearby as we sampled a variety of the wines. All of the Brunellos were absolutely perfect, first-class wines. I was floored at how beautiful they tasted. Thankfully, the fog lifted finally so that we could see the nearby landscape - gorgeous!
Mario was nice enough to let us park our RV on the property so we stayed over night before heading to Venice the next morning. We were so grateful he allowed us to stay there and he even made us breakfast the next day!
We truly had the most wonderful weekend at Terralsole. Mario is a warm, friendly and wonderful host and we can't wait to go back there to spend a summer.
We've only been buying Terralsole Brunello's since then... just wonderful!
