About
The Capanna farm, owned by the Cencioni family since 1957, is situated in the Montosoli area, to the north of Montalcino. It was founded by Giuseppe Cencioni and, helped by his sons Benito and Franco, it was one of the first farms of the modern period of Brunello. They started bottling their own wines in the 1960's and right after Brunello di Montalcino was granted DOC status in 1966.

Our stay at Capanna Suites and visit to the winery was a dream. The views from the grounds were breathtaking, the room comfortable, clean, and spacious, and the hotel restaurant (il Passagio) was the best meal we had during our two weeks in Italy. The spa was such a nice refuge after spending days in touring other cities and best of all the staff was amazingly helpful. Special shout out to Davide at the winery who guided us on a wonderful, informative tour and led us through a spectacular wine tasting. He was also extremely helpful in setting up our shipment of wine back to the US!

My wife and I did a wine tasting at Campanna and truly enjoyed the experience. The winery is family-owned with three generations still living on the vineyard. Daniele was extremely friendly and knowledgeable, provided a great tasting, and even let us try an extra wine when we had questions about the differences in vintages. We'd recommend visiting Campanna to anyone visiting Montalcino.

We had a very fun and educational time at Capanna. Davide was a great host– patient with giving directions to the winery, friendly, very knowledgable about winemaking, and glad to answer all our many questions. The setting (just outside Montalcino) is beautiful; the wines and grappas are great. It was interesting to see how different they can be year-to-year. Of course we had to buy some wine and grappa to bring home too! Booking in advance is recommended. All in all we really enjoyed our time. Thank you Davide!

Our visit to CapAnna was nothing but amazing. We booked the visit beforehand and Daniele was very helpful and communicative and made sure that we knew the directions etc. well before the visit. Once we arrived Daniele came out and greeted us and gave us the grand tour followed by a tasting. Daniele took great care of us, was extremely friendly, knowledgeable and down to earth. The winery itself is a beautiful rustic stone building which has been renovated with great attention to details and sits in a great location not far from Montalcino. In fact CapAnna's vineyards are located on the prestigious Montosoli hill which is famous for producing some of the very best grapes in the whole area. Needless to say the wines were amazing and we could not stop ourselves from buying a few cases. All in all, CapAnna is without doubt our favorite producer in the area and we are already planning our next visit!

We visited this winery as part of our honeymoon tour and we were not disappointed. Daniele gave us a tour where we started by seeing the vineyard and how the slope and sun determines where the grapes are planted. We then learned about the buildings on the property before entering the cellar. We ended our tour with wine sampling. Our family prefers white wine and even though it wasn't part of our tasting, we were able to sample the wines and ended up shipping some home. Our family loves the wine and wishes they could have joined us.

My wife and I toured five wineries in Montalcino in September 2016. We chose them based on recommendations from Gordon’s Fine Wine experts in Waltham, Massachusetts and from Kerin O’Keefe’s book, Brunello di Montalcino: Understanding and Appreciating One of Italy’s Greatest Wines.

The second vineyard we visited was Capanna where Daniele Marconi cheerfully greeted us and led us on a private tour and tasting. Daniele’s enthusiasm for the wine business in general and Capanna in particular was palpable, and he provided a very insightful tour of the winery, sharing Capanna’s vineyard, fermentation, and aging practices and explaining how each phase contributes to the quality and characteristics of their wines. He covered the rich history of the vineyard and the role of Capanna’s owner, Patrizio Cencioni, as both a wine maker and the president of the Consortium of the Brunello di Montalcino Wine. Long days for him!

The tasting following the tour included some of the great Brunello reserva from the 2010 vintage, which we were fortunate to buy from their dwindling stock. Daniele handled all of the shipping details. Capanna also creates a classic Moscadello di Montalcino Vendemmia Tardiva that is delicious. We felt privileged to receive such a warm welcome, enthusiastic tour and the opportunity to taste some truly great wines.

As a bonus, the Capanna property itself is a page right out of a Tuscany tour book. The winery takes its name from the capanna (Italian for “cabin” or “cottage”) that is adjacent to the wine cellar and adds to the winery’s rural charm and beauty. A family of farm cats we were invited to meet completed the bucolic picture - Italian hospitality in the countryside at its best!

We had a great time. Daniele was very welcoming and knowledgeable and looked after us superbly. It was great to meet the owner as well and have a short tour of the vineyard and the winery before our tasting. We walked out of there very happy and I would definitely visit again... not to mention drink their delicious Brunellos!

We took a tour and wine tasting and it was a fantastic experience. Our TOUR GUIDE was very knowledgeable about the different processes for Rosso, Brunello and Riserva. We were very impressed--so much so that we are having 12-bottles shipped back to the US! And, what a great treat when we were able to meet with the owner/founder of this winery! I will definitely visit here again!

Me and my family visited Capanna in the very end of October. The weather was drastic but it didn't stop us from enjoying every minute in this fantastic place. The views are breathtaking and the property is very beautiful itself.
Daniele took a great care of us and provided us with the most complete information about the history of the vineyard and their wines. We had a degustation and their wines are very very good. We brought a few back home.
Thank you Daniele and Capanna for our unforgettable experience in Montalcino!
