We thoroughly enjoyed the winery tour of Altesino, Guilia was very warm and informative. We love this wine, and it was interesting to try another IGT we do not see on the market usually. The setting is beautiful, easy to find, we had no issue...More

Outstanding tour with Giovanni, he was very proud of his position. Wines were excellent. Olive oil was outstanding. The view from the estate overlooks a 360* view. Worth the drive to visit a beautiful place.

Julia was our host and she was amazing. The wine is delicious and the winery is immaculate. The premier wine tasting with cheese and meat was very tasty. Highly recommended.

Detailed tour, friendly guide speaking good English and happy to answer an infinite wave of questions. Wines are good, and reasonably priced as for Montalcino classics (especially the Vin Santo is worth the price). The property itself is beautifully located in a small hill, overlooking...More

Pienza-Montalcino Day Trip--which to see first? (9 Replies)
I am devoting a day of our itinerary to sample la dolce vita in Pienza and Montalcino, but I am not sure which town to visit first. We're leaving directly from the Hertz office in Florence on via Sansovino del, so I think it will take us 2 hours to get to Montalcino (arrival around 11AM) or 2.5 hours to Pienza (arrival around 11:30AM). We have a 2PM wine tasting at the Altesino Winery, so wherever we go first we will have to leave in time to make our appointments. So I guess my real question...More

Pienza is quite small. It takes about 10 minutes to walk from one end of town to the other (without stopping in shops etc. naturally)

Barone Ricasoli - thoughts? alternatives? (5 Replies)
We will be ending our Italian vacation with 5 days outside of Siena - I found Barone Ricasoli and are considering a visit - it is about 22 km (according to google maps) from our B&B - Frances Lodge. We would love to visit the a castle - what are your thoughts on this one? Others you would recommend? Things to do on our way there and back? The only other things we have planned so far on our Siena part of the trip is Altesino winery in Brunello (and the car drive there and back and...More

I love the grounds up on the hill and the winery below. This is the place that Chianti wine was invented. If you go look for the WW II bullet holes in walls. Since the family bought the vineyard back from a giant corporation, the wine is excellent.
