Took a guided tour of the villa with an English speaking guided. The group was fairly small (around twelve people) so not too big that it wasn't possible to hear the talk.
Fascinating place with an interesting history, particularly the Italian explorer and his artefacts.
If you wish to view the gardens leave plenty of time as they are quite extensive and on a very steep hillside.

Beautiful villa and grounds. Well worth the visit! Great views of Lake Como. Short hike up the hill in Lenno will get you there

Absolutely stunning! I was a little unsure about the ferry to small boat logistics of getting here, and we could only book tickets for a garden tour (I highly recommend getting tickets in advance--we bought ours 2 days prior and availability was very limited). But our tickets were for 3pm and when we arrived I asked if they had any cancellations to get an English-speaking tour of the inside of the villa. Thankfully they did, and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Even my 18- and 20-year-old boys were fascinated by the tour. We did luck out with the weather and got some amazing photos--definitely worth the trip!

Beautiful setting. We didn't make reservation so could tour inside but the garden is beautiful. Take advantage of water taxi half way on your walk from the ferry to the property. 6 euro for one way and 8 euro for both so you don't have to walk the uphill pavement to reach the property

We parked about a 10 minute walk from the entrance to the path that leads to the villa. Parking at this location was free. There is some parking closer to the start of the path that leads to the villa but we didn’t see any empty spots. Make sure you bring comfortable shoes if you do decide to walk the path to the villa. It is a steep road, my calf’s are still hurting 3 days later and I do work out regularly. You may choose to ride a water taxi if you prefer to avoid the walk or want to see the villa from a different perspective. I purchase tickets about a month in advance for the tour of the house. Our guide was charming and knowledgeable. The tour group size was small and well paced. The artifacts and decor of the interior were visually pleasing. I highly recommend seeing this place, one of the highlights of Lake Como

Stunning site - pictures barely do it justice…
The tour of the villa is worth the extra price, if only to see some priceless artifacts.

Nice walk from the ferry (20-25 mins) but a bit of a steep hill to climb. Took the private shuttle boat back for 6 euro - very cool to see the Villa from the water.

I only went to the garden and it is beautiful! If you like gardens I suggest you give yourself an hour or more here. If you’re in it to get the best photos, then more time- cos you need to wait for the crowds to clear. It is a uphill 20-30mins walk from the ferry terminal unless you wanna wait for the water taxi (6-8 euros depending on 1 or 2 way). But the water taxi- if you miss one, is about a 15min wait. To get to the water taxi, walk downwards towards the villa. At one junction there will be a sign to point you towards either the taxi or to walk.

On Lake Como there are many villas open to the public. Among them Villa del Balbianello is one of the most beautiful. It’s located on a wooded hill above the lake, in Lenno in the municipality of Tramezzina.
The Villa was built at the end of the 16th century by Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini on a former Franciscan convent. In 1974, Count Guido Monzino, a Milanese explorer, bought it and turned it into a museum with objects brought back during his expeditions to Patagonia, Equatorial Africa, Greenland, the North Pole and the Himalayas. Currently the owner is the Italian Environment Fund. This Villa is known for its gardens, with flowers and trees in the colours of the Italian flag: green, white and red.
Scenes from several films have been shot at the Villa, such as "Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones" by George Lucas and "Casino Royale" from the James Bond saga. Currently, paying a few thousand euros, the bride and groom can celebrate their wedding in the Villa and take photos on the same balcony where Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala got married in Star Wars II, surrounded by the soldiers of the Empire.
In addition, you can enjoy doing other things in and around the lake: swimming, fishing, boating, taking a funicular ride, having a paragliding or parasailing experience, trekking, etc.

We visited this beautiful villa as we’d seen it from the lake. It was so worth going to see. The gardens are amazing. It was misty on the day we went but I imagine the views would be spectacular on a clear day!
The entry price includes a guided tour of the house, and our guide was very informative.
It’s quite a hike to the house but there is a shuttle boat that can drop or pick you up from the jetty at the villa. We caught it back and it was a great way to see the villa from a different angle. I would definitely recommend a visit to this beautiful place!

If you are near Como, you cant skip this paradise in earth. I am not surprised even Anakin fell in love here 😀 Just around 40 min by bus from Como, and an amazing 20 min walk before reaching the villa. When you get there you can find the famous spots from movies, or just sit on a bench and watching the lake for hours. Absolutely recommended!
