We booked a tour of the synagogue and adjacent Jewish Museum and this was one of the highlights of our stay in Rhodes. We met amazing Isaac who travels from his home in South Africa every summer to share the story of his mother and that of the Jewish community of Rhodes. We learnt so much in our short time there about Italian presence in Rhodes, the relationships between communities, the story of the Sephardi Jews and their language from 1500 to present days, the deportation of the island's Jews to Auschwitz and what became of the few who survived, it was a truly amazing experience I will not forget.
The synagogue itself is well preserved. A door leads to a very interesting and well documented musuem with an amazingly well-preserved Torah from the 16th century. Definitely not to be missed!

The synagogue is beautiful. It's unfortunate that the current Jewish community in Rhodes (which used to comprise several thousand) is so small that it is only used in summer when there are enough tourists to make up the necessary quorum for holding prayers. The museum, in the same building, is very informative about the former Jewish community. Sometimes there are guided tours of the Jewish quarter, but not this year.

A tasteful, educational and rich cultural and historical presentation of Jewish life in Rhodes. I enjoyed my visit and the woman who greeted me was informative and friendly. Don't miss the gift shop - a lot of local artist-made items are available. Call ahead during winter months to get in.

Not only is the synagogue beautiful, but the museum detailing the history of the Rodeian Jews throughout the ages from 200 BC through their decimation during the Holocaust to the present day where only 37 remain was fascinating.

The building features a beautiful mosaic floor decorated with Jewish marriage certificates, photographs and a detailed written history of the past 2000 years of Judaism in Rhodes under numerous empires.

It is a must see.
