Not only is the synagogue beautiful, but the museum detailing the history of the Rodeian Jews throughout the ages from 200 BC through their decimation during the Holocaust to the present day where only 37 remain was fascinating. The building features a beautiful mosaic floor decorated with Jewish marriage certificates, photographs and a detailed written history of the past 2000 years of Judaism in Rhodes under numerous empires. It is a must see.…

So glad we stopped to see this synagogue that is rarely used anymore. It was beautifully maintained and had some unusual things in it such as an olive wood 10 commandments on a column and a lyre of David on the back wall. It is a shame that there are only about 20 Jews left in Rhodes now. So glad they have preserved this synagogue. Gift shop was nice too.…

We would like to thank you for taking the time to write your comments. It's always nice to hear that our efforts to offer our visitors a better understanding of the life of the former Jewish Community of Rhodes and of its tragic end is being appreciated. Thank you for visiting us!

I just want to recommend the visit of this graceful and unique ancient synagogue of Rhodes which stands as a witness of the once vibrant sefardic community which lasted until the 23rd of July 1944. A mikve, ritual bath, is located in the room dedicated to the museum. And it is very moving to imagine that generations of women used this mikve (for themselves and the food ustensiles), notwithstanding the sea.The museum dispays a number of genuine artefacts and gives informations which enable to get an overview of the History of the Jews in Rhodes, their way of life full of dignity and creativity until their extermination without any help of their neighbours beside the Turkish consul's endeavours. The visit of the synagogue and the jewish quarter was commented by Isaac Habib, whose mother Lina Capelluto, born in Rhodes, was a survivor from Auschwitz. With him, always mixing his own family history and the general history, we discovered the traces of the jewish life, institutions, yeshiva, Talmud torah, the Alliance Israélite Universelle school's fountain (renamed Italian school),former jewish houses... From 1956 on, some families, originally not from Rhodes, came here in order to create a new kernel of jewish life and to perpetuate the memory of the community of the Jews of Rhodes. Their descendants, very few now, and very friendly people, make this memory a living memory. The president of the Museum, Mrs. Carmen Cohen, is very much involved in the relationship with descendants of Rhodes Jews and educational institutions abroad. I wish them all the success this Memorial task deserves for the Jews of Rhodes's and for the sake of human dignity. Thank you for making us witnesses of the witnesses.…
