The Jewish Martyrs Square should be a touching reminder that the Rhodes’ Jews are not forgotten.
There is a Monument for the Victims of the Holocaust (a black marble column) as a reminder.
We fled away from this terrible place filled with captured parrots to entertain the tourists.

Busy market square in the midst of the old city .... You will find many cafes and restaurants here, some benches in the shade below some trees, many tourists and parrots - and in the very middle, a monument for the jews that died on or from Rhodes in world war 2.

Very dangerous place!! Stay away from the restaurants and the parrots! They are hold by mafia! They wont hesitate to take tour family in hostage, asking you huge amounts of money..

This is in the Old Jewish Quarter of Rhodes Old Town ; the area is surrounded by shops, bars and restaurants ; some of which date back years. It is all very interesting and has a good atmosphere , however it is very busy , and the bar owners/workers are keen to vie for your custom.

This memorial is located in the Old Town of Rhodes, in the Jewish Quarter in the Square of Jewish Martyrs. It is also known as Sea Horse Square, because of the ornate sea horse fountain nearby .

The Holocaust Memorial commemorates the1,604 Jewish people of Rhodes that were sent to die at Auschwitz.

This black marble, many sided column, is inscribed on all sides, with the same words, but in different languages including English,French, Greek and Hebrew.

No matter what language, the important message is the same "Never Forget".

It stands on a small plinth in the busy Square shaded by 6 large trees and surrounded by shops, restaurants, cafes/tavernas. Sadly shops and restaurants piled up their rubbish under the trees, awaiting collection.

There were also a number of parrots on perches, under the trees by the memorial, their owners charge tourists to take photographs of them.

Due to the darkness caused by the shade of the trees and the dark colour of the memorial, it can be hidden in the shadows and overlooked.

Rather than walk by, would encourage visitors and passers-by to stop and spend a few moments and appreciate the sentiment of the memorial.

We did see the memorial a number of times during our recent stays in Rhodes as our accommodation, Spot Hotel, was located in the Jewish Quarter a few moments walk away.

Was on our hit list to visit due to being one of the locations from Escape to Athena film (best motorcycle chase scene ever). The seahorse fountain remains but the rest has changed so much.

However we did not get a chance to stop and soak in the atmosphere because as soon as you enter the square you are hounded to visit one of many restaurants from the moment you step on till the moment you leave.

They do not take no for an answer, even if you are eating an ice cream. Also many of the restaurants are linked, such as our unfortunate encounter with Captains table. They seem overpriced and soulless.

Unfortunately we had to pass through the square on a regular basis as there was no easy detour. However without fail we were harassed whether first thing in the morning or late in the evening. Be warned and don’t stop to look.

Go somewhere off the beaten track with less aggressive tactics to relax.

Beautiful old square in Medieval Rodos. Situated on the main strip, so rather busy. Nice restaurants and shops.
