Best view,worth climbing.

Best view worth climbing. Amazing red roofs everywhere and big stone in the middle of the village on which church is located. Church is opened until dusk, be welcome to come inside and see the interior.

Impressive

You can’t help but look at the beautiful church on the rocks as you approach Petra from road or sea. We made a special visit from Molyvos to climb the steps and visit the pretty church and courtyard. Lovely views from the top. Definitely worth seeking out if in the area.

Worth a visit !
Jun 2019 • Couples
As a small resort, this is probably the most well-known place to visit in Petra.

Quite a few steps, not as many as there could be though and worth the climb... doesn't take too long !

Decent view from the top.... church closed when we were there but courtyard okay for a few photo opportunities....

A must if you are in Petra !

great views
Aug 2018 • Family
great views of Petra and a beautiful church on top of a rocky outcrop.
Bit of a walk up there up some steep steps but worth it.probably better not to go in the hottest part of the day.and take something to cover yourself up as it is a church and they like you to show some respect.

Must do whilst in Petra
Oct 2018 • Couples

As the landmark in Petra, you need to take the steps up to the church. Mention is made of the steps but it’s not a difficult climb and the views are certainly worth it. As is common in Greek churches, the inside is highly decorative.

A very impressive place

Atop of the huge stone which gave the name of the old fishmen village (Petra = Stone, in Greek), there is an interesting church, surrounded by the ruins of a Byzantine - Genovese castle. The actual church was built in the mid of 18th century and restored in the mid of 19th century. Although orthodox, the architecture, somewhat eclectic, is essentially baroque - Italian. The quite surprising name of the church, Panagya Glikofilousa (The Virgin Mary of the Sweet Kiss), is due to an allegedly myraculous event, transmitted by a very popular local legend. Even you don't understand Greek, it is very rewording to assist to a Sunday Liturgy, as the atmosphere is touching and illustrative for the Hellenic religious life. The views from the top of the stone are wonderful.
