Gem of a beach, probably our favourite and we went to Balos! No sand, but instead small pebbles and then rocks in the water....but crystal clear water, so calm. Its' a cove so far better than a boring length of sandy beach. Free sun beds. WC and tavern open 10am to 9pm selling great food. Off the beaten track. Car needed, but plenty of parking.

Afrata is just a small traditional village with a few genuine restaurants (tavernas) including the one of the beach. One can even stay in the village itself at a few hundred meters away; for more information see the very basic website that the village council has put up recently: www.afrata.info.

I went here for a solo MC ride to see the beach and have lunch. Great ride out, beautiful place, nice pebbly beach. I found a table and sat down, enjoyed the view and felt peace and quiet descend. Then I heard the word «reserved» yelled into my ear. There was no indication on the table that I had trespassed onto someone else’s domain, and the «reserved» dude did not even bother to indicate that there were several free tables in the secondary sitting area. So no food to be had, I just left. The food looked kinda average, from what I could see on the tables of the people not being you-are-not-greeked away. Never going back.

Such a nice place rocky clean beach typical of the mountainous Cretan landscape. The tavern by the sea is also exceptional !! May be the best beach-restaurant combination in the area

Afrata is a beautiful village, about 6 km north of Kolymbari and 30 km west of the city Chania. The beach is 1 km from the village in a small sheltered bay. There, you will find a canteen with umbrellas and sunbeds as well as tamarisk trees for shade by the sea. The beach is pebbly and the sea is ideal for snorkeling.

Pebble beach with super snorkelling. Rocky access though so get swim shoes in Kolymbari first for €10. Waves were pretty big when it’s windy though. Our 7 year old loved the rock pools but was frightened by the larger waves.
Sun beds are free if you buy a drink or food from taverna. Taverna does not take credit cards though so bring cash.

Small and intimate little bay with just few sunbeds and umbrellas (cca 10) all available for free.
Accessible by car, free parking by the small taverna with friendly owners and afordable prices.
A must visit, if you're looking for a peaceful and pretty wild place.

Is not on the way to the most touristic beaches but if you are looking for a beach at Chania typical to the cretan lanscape then this is the place. Easy road access with a cafe-restaurant just by the sea

Pretty beach, but a bit crowded and rocky. Stayed for a short time. Imagine if you are staying in Afrata, it’s a good place to hang as far as beaches go.
