On our journey from Olympia to Delphi, we made a brief stop in Nafpaktos, a charming coastal town that quickly captivated us. Though unplanned, this detour provided a welcome break from our bus ride.

Nafpaktos, nestled between mountains and the sea, has a rich history, best known for its well-preserved Venetian castle and the historic Battle of Lepanto in 1571. We began exploring at the medieval harbor, a captivating port surrounded by ancient stone walls, which transported us to a bygone era.

Wandering through the old town's narrow streets, we admired the blend of Venetian, Ottoman, and Greek architecture. The peaceful cobblestone lanes, lined with colorful houses and blooming bougainvillea, encouraged us to slow down and savor the moment. Small cafes and shops added to Nafpaktos's quaint charm, and we enjoyed a light snack at a cozy café overlooking the water, with the gentle sea breeze enhancing the experience.

Our brief stop in Nafpaktos enriched our Greek adventure. The town's historical significance, stunning views, and warm atmosphere left a lasting impression. If traveling between Olympia and Delphi, we highly recommend a detour to Nafpaktos for a glimpse into Greece's coastal charm and storied past. Sometimes, the unplanned moments are the most memorable.

We stopped here on a windy but quiet Sunday morning. The port is important for the 1571 Battle of Lepanto (Miguel de Cervantes was wounded here) where the Venetians lost to the Ottomans.
On the wall is the sculpture of the Greek hero, Giorgos Anemogiannis, executed by the Turks in 1821.

A beautiful old harbor. Fortress walls that keep the sea out. There are many cozy restaurants and bars and it is beautifully lit in the evening. Surrounding it is the old historic center with nice shops.

We spent one night in Nafpaktos. What a gorgeous historic seaport community. Easy to find, just minutes over the pretty bridge (cannot remember the name). Lots of restaurants, shops, hotels, and public beaches. You can park your car and walk everywhere. We only drove our car up to the Venetian castle. You can drive to some other historic sites that aren't too far away (Delphi, etc.), but we were constrained by time .... maybe next time we can do that.

We stopped in the small, seaside province of Naupactus, for an hours, afternoon break with our tour group, before continuing on towards Delphi.

The old Port is situated on a bay along this north coast stretch of the Gulf of Corinth.

The harbor itself, is accessible only to small yachts and boats.

Surrounding the immediate area are local shops, cafes, restaurants and local bars.

Within the port there are monuments commemorating the Battle of Lepanto and the statue of the Cervantes.

You can also access the beach and bay area, through the small archway beside Cervantes’ monument.

Have been here before and enjoyed this tiny Cousy town with great Naval History. I do not understand why the Dimarchio choose to change the plaquette of De Cervantes, who fought here during the fierce sea battle of Lepanto, and got wounded.
Reinstate the old one please.

Nafpaktos is the old Lepant of the famous naval battle. Today a lovely small town by the sea. If you visit do not miss a coffee or late night drink at the port. Morning coffee for the calm an d the beauty of the place, evening drink for the nightlife.
