This museum was a great wee surprise. Dynamic exhibit with several films, hundreds of artefacts, wax figures, models, and interactive quizzes detailing the history and production of salt around the world and in the local area. Reception was really welcoming and provided us with excellent English translation of the information boards, admission price was very reasonable as well.

This was a fantastic find. We expected it to be a boring museum but instead spent a good 3 hours here. It is well sign posted and has a free car park but the car park is a couple of minutes walk away. The staff there spoke okay English and were so friendly and helpful. The museum itself is really interesting and explains the history and process of the salt extraction that happens in these parts. We had driven through the salt marshes on the way in but had not appreciated their significance, history or importance to the local area. Most of the information points are in French but the videos are subtitled in French and English. There are also some touch screen activities that are really good and can be done in English. Most of the museum is downstairs and houses the permanent exhibition. Upstairs there is another exhibition but we didn't find this as interesting and I think is temporary. Upstairs there is also a small room for kids craft activities and that kept my kids busy for half an hour. There is a shop that has some interesting things for sale and is quite cheap. The whole place is really modern, has good facilities and nearby there are restaurants if you want to make a day out of it.

We visited because it was raining, but even in bright sunshine this is a very good museum. All about " les paludiers" , the people who get the salt out of the sea, and about the tools they used. So interesting. Next, visit the saltpans and see if you can recognise some of the things you saw in the museum.

It was a rainy afternoon, we needed to find something to do! My kids didn't want to go to 'another museum' (this was the first during our 2 week stay) and were dragged in pretty much kicking and screaming. Which is not pretty when they are 10 and 12! Anyway, the entrance fee was tiny (5€ I think) and the receptionist asked my 10yo if he'd like to play detective. He answered 'yes', of course. So we were given a rucksack full of useful items to track down the clues (a mirror, torch). It was free and all I had to do is leave my passport at reception in exchange, to ensure it all came back in one piece. My kids then zoomed into the museum and did the tour looking for clues. This really helped their surly mood and got them interested and talking about the displays. There were quite a few interactive displays and the exhibits were well chosen. Not too many but very interesting and lively. The building is lovely - modern and with a touch of old tradition. I learnt a lot and it was a good afternoon out.

We visited this on a damp day in June. This is a small but excellently designed museum about the salt marshes and the production of sea salt. Most of the information boards are in French but the audio visual screens have English subtitles and the interactive items on the computer screens are also available in English. We were well entertained for a couple of hours. It was good value for money and explains the land use that you will see all around this area if you visit.

The salt marshes of this area have always fascinated me, so I was keen to go to this museum. It told the history of sea salt, how it is harvested with lots of diagrams, video and models. It also shows the history of the sea salt industry and how much it created the wealth. for the area in the 15th to 18th centuries. It showed you how they made salted butter, a famous item here, and how they used to salt cod , herring and other fish. It is is a modern building which probably used to be a salt warehouse. La Baule still has loads of salt marshes so the industry is still thriving. There is quite a lot of description in English . Discounts for young and old !

A lot more interesting than you might expect a "Salt Museum" to be! We had seen the salt flats which surround this area, as well as the salt on sale everywhere and wondered how it was produced. The museum collection is very well put together, covering different production methods from around the world and is very informative. I was pleased to see that my part of the world (Cheshire, UK) was included on the map of salt areas of the world! I especially liked the films (many with English subtitles) and the section on the way of life of the salt workers.
