We experienced a Horseback Ride with Hacienda Ario, a working, family-owned ranch with 5,000 acres on the Pacific. The tour includes a bilingual nature guide and cowboy who guide you through rivers, mountains, forests, farms and ends with a ride on the beach. It was incredible and our guide Douglas was so knowledgeable and kept us safe at all times. After he found out that one of the people in our group could not come with us because she was so badly sunburned, he cut two big pieces of an aloe plant and made the 30 minute or more drive to bring it to us. We learned about how he is training in natural horsemanship which fits perfectly with the ranch’s sustainability model for rural, healthy lifestyle in which horses are essential to the way of life. There is something magical about riding a horse on the beach with the ocean waves crashing at their hooves. Don’t miss this!

There just is no comparison with what Ario Tours offers in seeing the beautiful Nicoya Peninsula on horseback. The first huge bonus is that it is on a private cattle and horse ranch adjoined to a national preserve. From deep old rain forest, to panoramic hilltops to the wide open deserted beach - you’ll see it all. And no beach dogs to spook the horses. Owner Veronica and her tour guides are all knowledgeable equestrians who also give wonderful local information on flora and fauna. The horses are in beautiful health and nicely trained, expertly matched up with the riders’ skills. Do this tour once and it will spoil you for all others.

My son (he’s 10) and I couldn’t have enjoyed our ride more. The guides were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. The scenery was breathtaking, we saw monkeys and rode right on the beachfront. Couldn’t be happier with our experience.

We were told to book a horseback riding tour with Ario and it did not disappoint. Douglas was a great guide who shared a lot of information about the property and the native plants and trees. He was very attentive to all 4 of us and our varied riding experience. The experience is about 2 hours and takes you through the hills with amazing views, down to the fields, over a river, and along the beach. Not touristy at all. I highly recommend Ario to anyone looking for a horseback riding experience. On the way back to Santa Teresa, we stopped to watch the sunset which capped off the activity nicely.

We made arrangements with Casey for our morning horseback ride from Hacienda Ario. I had never been before and was nervous but Casey and Roland gave me wonderful instructions and a kind and gentle horse. Casey gave us the history of this 4700 acre beautiful family owned working ranch and devotion to conservation, research and education programs. We loved learning about all the trees and vegetation and hearing the howling monkeys and various birds along the way. I can't believe how comfortable I felt being on my horse in the fields and woods and beach. Roland was gracious and helped me learn some Spanish along the way. I will never forget this truly wonderful experience. Thank you! By the way, my husband had been horseback riding before and was thrilled that I enjoyed myself as much as he did.
