One of my most memorable experiences in Belize and I have traveled throughout the country four times. We stayed at Palmento Grove and engaged in both the Garifuna Cultural Experience and Bioluminescence and Drumming excursion. The family who runs it is gracious and are wonderful teachers. We drummed with Boom-Boom, harvested casava, processed coconut from the tree to milk, and cooked a fabulous meal that included fish straight out of the lagoon. The island is idyllic and the cabins rustic, but very comfortable and high enough in the air for a lovely breeze and views. If you want to really learn and interact with the people of Belize, be sure to include Palmento Grove.

The entire experience was a learning experience that I will never forget! I learned so much about the Garifuna culture and it was a completely immersive experience, down to getting dressed in the traditional wear. The culinary tour was the best experience of all! I learned how to make the entire meal from scratch, made it and it was delicious! Uwahnie was an amazing guide; well knowledgeable and it felt like home at the lodge. I will certainly be returning with guests!

I already knew quite a bit about the Garafuna people and culture but learned more and loved the layed back and peaceful experience. It’s a beautiful setting. Cooking the Hudut was fun and delicious. I also loved the herb garden. As there were only two other people on the tour it felt quite intimate as well. I’m glad my participation could help even in a small way.
