Excellent High Up Experience
Apr 2021
Excellent experience - will visit again one day. Our group of 9 had no issues purchasing tickets. No lines to wait in. Gondola ride was awesome - so high up! Very clean, spacious, quiet gondola's. We got the gondola lunch combo and thought it was great value for money. Pinnacles restaurant is at the top with very yummy food. Views on a good day would be amazing, sadly we got stuck with some cloud but still really enjoyed the atmosphere. The staff were very accommodating and lovely to deal with. The restaurant and facilities were very clean and tidy. I have dietary requirements which the staff took seriously and helped in a positive way. The chef (Kelly) came to talk to me personally and took time to discuss what I needed. She went over and above to cater for me and I really appreciated it - she made my day! If you want to experience the mountain you can go for a walk. The ride back down was a breeze. The parking was easy with plenty of parks available.

the view
Mar 2021
What an incredible view from the top. Amazing on a nice day. We did part of the walk which was fun and involved a lot of climbing over rocks. It was fun. Food options at the cafe were ok, restaurant was closed which didnt matter. We only wanted a coffee and a snack. Very smooth ride in the gondola and the surroundings are just a different world. We really enjoyed this.

Horrendously overpriced
Feb 2021
A very expensive ride. $39 for a ride on the gondola up to the Knoll Ridge Cafe and Pinnacles restaurant. Little did i know that the restaurant closes early and my 2pm ride up rewarded me with a $6.00 small flat white coffee and a small choice of deep fried junk food at exorbitant prices. I've never paid $6 for a small coffee before. Not even in the priciest parts of Auckland or Wellington. And the crazy priced deep fried bar type snacks were unappealing especially at their insane prices. These guys are taking the proverbial. The views are good of course. Might be worth going up if you're going up for the buffet lunch I guess or intend to go on a hike in the rocks from the Knoll Ridge. But if you don't have a purpose to go up its expensive as hell. I'm sure overseas tourists are happy to pay through the nose for this, but frankly for us kiwis its an absolute ripoff. Can't in all good conscience recommend.

Almost Perfect
Feb 2021
Our group of three travelled up the Sky Waka Gondola for a buffet lunch mid February.
We found the gondola ride and views fantastic. The staff at the gondola and the Pinnacles restaurant to be helpful, friendly and professional.
There was a good range of buffet food, the meat dish and fish dish lovely and tender. Sadly what let it down was most of the "hot" food including the soup was only lukewarm.
I have seen this problem noted in earlier reviews and hope before my friends and I visit again in March a solution will be found.

Muanga Ruapehu commands respect. Been visiting our National Taonga since high school field trips and shamefully have only just learned now ,over 40 years later of the cultural significance of this priceless treasure for tanga Te whenua.. my gratitude to Iwi and Hapu and DoC for shared guardianship of this incomparable Muanga.

Sky Waka and lunch
Jan 2021
Yesterday, my wife and I had lunch at the Pinnacles Restaurant to celebrate her birthday. It cost us $59 each which comprised $39 for the gondola and $20 for the buffet meal.

We did not have to wait for the Sky Waka. The process of booking tickets, paying for them and picking them up was easy and the staff pleasant to deal with. We had no wait for the gondola and when we arrived at the Knoll Ridge Chalet, we did not have to wait to be seated at our table at the Pinnacles Restaurant, even though we were thirty minutes early.

The buffet lunch met all our expectations. There was plenty of food to choose from and there was a well-chosen wine list; we enjoyed the lovely Pegasus Bay Riesling. Our waiter, Dawson, and his wife (who was maître d’), were very pleasant and kind and delivered exceptional service. When he found out that it was my wife’s birthday, Dawson even delivered a piece of chocolate brownie with a candle and ‘Happy Birthday’ piped on the plate to our table.

The whole experience was memorable. The view from the Kncll Ridge Chalet is exceptional. The chalet itself is an architectural marvel. The experience is entirely different from winter and it was interesting, if not a little frightening, to see just what rocks lie beneath the snow in winter time.

Congratulations on a fine summer Sky Waka dining experience.

Worth the views - not the meal
Dec 2020
Absolutely amazing views on a clear day and worth doing once but probably not more for the price.

Don’t bother with lunch at The Pinnacles - the meal was average at best and our red wine was served in an ice bucket, we had to leave it on the window ledge in the sun to come up to room temperature. At a cost of $59 each for waka and meal you can get better value elsewhere. It is a pity really but then the foods wasn’t that great before the upgrade.

Stunningly beautiful day, full sun, amazing snow and views.

Spectacular ride in gondola to top of the mountain, wear sensible shoes (if not skiing) as you are walking on snow. The views, the mts, the snow and landscapes were to die for. So pleased I made the effort after a few days of bad weather closed the mt. This is one of those bucket list experiences you must do when visiting NZ Tongariro National Park.

One great now ruined
Sep 2020
Whakapapa was one the premium ski area in NZ and has been ruined by incompetent management. If you haven’t booked a car park you can’t drive to the ski field and only half the mountain is open for skiers and they don’t seem to care! I’d say don’t go - go South!
