There is not enough words to describe this track, other than the fact you have to wait for nice weather and that there is low to no vegetation along the way (no shade or a place to pee) this track was fantastic. Started up with...More

Amazing scenery. Need a good amount of fitness to do this walk. We did it in runners probably best to do it in hiking boots with some grip. The runners were very slippery when coming down the mountain. You need to stay close to the...More

This hike was challenging and beautiful. I'm glad we got to do it in the spring with a little bit of snow, it looked so nice sprinkled with white. The hike took us about 6 hours with stopping for lunch and many breaks for water...More

It's my 3rd time on this amazing trek and this time in winter it's a very different experience. We hiked from Mangatepopo Rd car park to Red crater and return the same way. It is important to be well equipped for alpine conditions, as temperatures...More

I backpacked the Tongariro Alpine Crossing circuit in April. Doing the crossing on the second day out, the trail was officially closed due to gale force winds and driving rain. Conditions when I left the hut were not bad, but the higher I hiked the...More

My wife and I were on a 25th anniversary trip and did the crossing. Perfect day with 100 mile vistas in every direction. Make sure to wear great hiking shoes. People were hiking in trainers and even sandals; not recommended. We hiked from the start...More

My husband and I did the crossing in July. Fist thing to know about going is July: it is cold, sometimes the weather conditions are poor and you might not be able to do it (safely) and there is a risk of avalanche. However, it...More

Conditions on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing can change rapidly during the autumn and we are unable to say whether there will be snow on the track when you visit. We recommend you call the Department of Conservation Visitor... More

We are going to Tongariro in early January and will be arriving at the National Park train station from Wellington around 1:15pm. It seems that it gets dark after 9:00; would it be crazy to attempt the alpine crossing starting in the early afternoon and finishing around nightfall? If that's not feasible, what are some good alternatives in the park that could be done comfortably in an afternoon?

Where is the best place to get an up to date weather forecast for the day that I want to do the one day Alpine crossing end of April or early May 2017. Is this a good time to do the Hike, weather permitting?

It's really allright , new zealand changes weather all the time, you will most likely find good weather, but just be ready with a rain jacket and sunscreen (in case)
