We contacted Lucho by email and did a trip with him in auguast 2019. As a family, we had special needs for our youngest son and together we searched and found a solution. The 5-day hike was adapted, the birthday son could choose, so we had an experience in the high jungle too. On the pictures you can see the brothers enjoy their stay, away from weekly business at home. We all keep remarqueble memories from the trip

The Huaytapallana Trek with Incas del Peru was set in an amazing scenery with a few exoeriences I doubt I could have had elsewhere. We hiked through a closed vicuna sanctuary, sleeped in a shepherd’s hut and had newly fished trout for lunch. But. I reserved the 3 day, 2night trek in February. The starting date was set to be June the 6th. I got the official confirmation on April the 27th. The night before the trek I was a bit worried that there was no sign of a briefing. I found out Sr Hurtado was in Lima, thinking the trek would start on the 7th. We had had no correspondance about the 7th of June. Eventually I lost a half day of trekking, got compensated for that but coming from Finland to Huancayo for the trek it was a disappointment. Sr Hurtado is very knowledgeable, but sometimes a bit too outspoken for his own good (considering I was the paying customer). His thoughts of caring for a dog is a waste of time, and cooking drinking water for a client being annoying and ”so much trouble” for example could in all honestly been left unsaid.

We took a day trip with Willy from IDP in December, a full day hike to Nevado Huaytapallana to enjoy the scenery and see the glacier. It was a fantastic trip and Willy is an excellent guide. The day was tiring for us, but Willy was very patient. Our daughter is 12 and managed fine, so it's a good trip for hardy kids. I can't recommend IDP enough..they were very responsive to email before our trip, found us a hostel in Huancayo the day we arrived (casa de la abuela was closed for Christmas) and gave us tons of information about visiting the villages outside Huancayo on our own. The kitchen at La Cabana (great food) even cooked our picky daughters ramen noodles for her. All in all a great agency.

The highlight of the trip was definitely the horseback ride up to the Nevado de Huaytapallana. Lucho organized this excursion for us -- he picked us up from the train, delivered us to our hotel (El Presidente) and had a driver pick us up early the next morning. He even arranged for us to have a pizza lunch since I warned him our children were (unfortunately) picky American eaters. Every time we see another nevado (snow covered peak or glacier) it's better than the last. The horses were first rate: handsome, well trained and well cared for. The caballero who provided the horses waxed eloquent on the beauty, serenity and contentment of his life with the horses and the mountains. Our 10 yro son was ecstatic since he had been told his horse would be led and then found out he was in control. I was impressed since this was a real trail ride, not just along a dirt road, going up and down slopes that were quite steep and in and out of the creek. After viewing the nevado we worked our way back down through mountains of great beauty where herds of llama, sheep and horses co-mingled, past encampments of herders, finally to come face to face with a group of llama at the end of the ride. I assure you the camera captured only a small fraction of the beauty and serenity of the area.

We did the artisan circuit with Lucho and it was brilliant. Lucho impressed me immediately when he told us - 'I understand what tourists want and try to give it to them'. So often in Peru, there seems to be little understanding of this. We booked at short notice - e-mail communication was smooth - and we were able to pay in cash at the office in Huancayo the day before our tour. Both Lucho and the lady in the office spoke excellent English. The tour lasted all day (10.00 - 17.00) and the price included lunch. PEN 364 for two. We were able to get a vegetarian option for lunch - the local speciality of papas a la huancaina. We visited several different artisans, there was no pressure to buy, although you will probably want to - the art is so beautiful, and it's wonderful to buy something from someone you've met and seen at work. Lucho was informative, and very flexible - when I mentioned how much I loved all the hats in Peru, he took us to the last hat-maker in a village en-route - even going so far as to call the guy and get him to come and open his workshop. Very good service. It's obvious that Lucho is passionate about helping to maintain traditional crafts and the artisans who carry them out. This was a great day for us.
