Classic tale where the journey is better than the destination.
The mural de la prehistorica was commissioned by Fidel Castro in 1961 and that’s probably why it is famous. The actual artwork is laughable - it kind of looks like something done in art school. However, most local tour operators use it as a endpoint for organised tours via horseback and the road into it is quite beautiful, passing closely to mogotes.
We personally hiked it to it using instructions found online. We passed through some amazing scenery.
They actually try to charge you money to view it but it is easily viewable from the fence adjacent to the gate, which is what we did.

Imagine giving a giant baby crayons and a hill to paint on and this is what you get. Don't get me wrong - it is rather big, so that makes for at least a bit of a sight, but that and the quite nice nature surrounding it really is it... a rock with some paint on it.

An impressive huge cliff painting dating back to the early 1960s of prehistoric animals and neandathal man. Not seen anything on this scale before. Very colourful and makes a great picture. 2 CUC entry.
There is also a bar on site famous for its pina colada, supposedly the best in Cuba!

The Mural de la Prehistoria is located at 4 km from Vinales, in the Sierra de Viñales. It was painted on the natural wall of the mogote Pita.
We were impressed by this huge 120m fresco, with required 4 years and a team of 18 people to make it.
We found that this fresco is amazing. It represents the geological and biological evolution of the Vinales valley, with a very rich fauna, including in particular dinosaurs, giant marine reptiles, snails, Indians.

Our tour group of 10 stopped here. The mural is most colorful and impressive. It took a team of 18 and 4 years to complete. It depicts the evolution of man in the valley. We had time to stroll the beautiful area and have a Pina Colada at the outdoor bar.

If you're in the area anyway (as we were) then pop along and see it and take a photo and tick it off your list. Don't make a special journey out to view it as it is just basically a painted rock. The site has a fairly large shop and a nice bar area for a refreshment but you wouldn't spend too long here.

Fourth time visiting Vinales, and this was my first time visiting Mural de la Prehistoria. We just visited from a distance. It is not too far from the town, so it is worth a visit if you have some background information about it. Otherwise, it is not a «must see».

Coming to the Valle del Vinales is a delight to us because nature is beautiful. After visiting Cueva del Indio we were still impressed by the remarkable beauty of the cave, when Mural de la Prehistoria created a beautiful beauty in front of us. We remained breathless. It was really pretty. About history, we learned that the name of the Mural of Prehistory comes from the big painting of prehistoric animals on the face of the cliff. The mural has been made in 1961. The picture in the mural is painted in very bright colors on one of the highest mogotes (typical hill in Valle del Vinales). There are plenty of coffee plantations in the area, and the scenery is beautiful. The best part of coming to the Mural of the Prehistoria is that you can enjoy some of the best piña coladas in Viñales, which are sold at the little kiosk near the mural.

Nothing amazing, you have to pay 3 CUCs but you can also see it from far without paying. They told us that if you are closer you can see the painting trace.
