We used the quaint town of Arcos de Valdevez as a jumping off place for several days of hiking in Soajo, Sistelo and the Peneda-Geres National Park. This is a green, lush area of Portugal that is a real treat for hikers. It would be hard to find a bad meal here--the meats, fish and vegetables are so fresh. A car is a necessity here but the roads are hilly, winding and often narrow. So we chose to take a Barenques bus from the Porto airport to Arcos de Valdevez. At the tourist office, we contracted with a cab driver to take us to the national park and small villages for our hikes. The fare was very reasonable and he gave us his phone number to call him when we were ready to return to Arcos. We enjoyed our stay at the historic Ribeira Collection Hotel by Piamonte which included a delicious buffet breakfast and an excellent staff who spoke English.

There isn’t all the information on the web I find so here is more a review turned towards practicalities.

We walk from Sistelo to vilela bridge. You could do it the other way around. We were 3 adults and 2 kids aged 10 and 12 who are not much used to long walks. At sistelo, people park along the main road as entry to village is for residents and there aren’t any parking spots anyway, we saw two cafe/ restaurants. At vilela there is a small parking, and a snack bark like the ones you may find on the beach: they serve drinks, toasted sandwiches soups and the like.
There are taxi numbers on the information panels in sistelo and On the vilela side, the cafe owner told us they could call one for us but there were two taxis waiting when we got there. The fare is on meter and it cost us 14 eur.

The walk is well signed posted I would say except for the start. In sistelo, you will see 3 large information signs on the different walks. You need to take the little road just opposite of the signs. At the first cross road you can take either side because it will join maybe a km later close to a swimming spot. Once you are on the path you need to follow the signs for ecovia arcos de Valvedez which indicates about 32km. The part from sistelo to vilela is about 10.5km.

The walk is very moderate and although there are a few slopes everything is easy to walk, mostly on smooth surface except when you are close to sistelo and you walk on very uneven cobbled street. The walk is alterning wooden walkways and normal path. Then you join a small road for about 1km in the middle. You will see blackberries, grapes, laurel etc on your way. After the road part you arrive at a swimming spot which is not very busy. The water is very refreshing! Then it’s mainly a track, until you get to another very cute swimming spot which is a lot busier but very charming. And finally we arrived at the bridge where we took a taxi.
One more thing is that you don’t see the terraces on this walk but there is a possible walk in sistelo or a drive.

A beautiful, moderate 20 km walk from Sistelo to Arocs de Valdevez along the Vez River. Well marked. Popular trail. Plenty of spots to stop to just cool your feet or take a dip in the river. Stopped at a trail side kiosk for a drink and to see a family of ostriches. Highly recommended walk.

Lovely trails. The sounds of the river and the birds absolutely make up for the boulders and the often difficult trail.
Magical hike. The only problem was a few kilometers on the tarmac..walking in the sun under c. 34 Celsius..

If you want to discover the North of Portugal and you are a friend of nature and walking, then you shouldn't miss this trail. It's called the Portuguese Tibet. Just google for more pictures to get an impression, but you should see it in real life. It's worth it! This trail alongside the Vez river is enourmous, don't wonder why it has 3 (or more?) stages from Arcos de Valdevez to Sistelo (the so called Ecovia do Vez). We didn't have the time to walk the complete trail but according to our local guide, Sistelo is the most beautiful stage. You can reach it easily by car and Sistelo offers a variety of short and long trails. We will certainly come back to walk the famous PR1 trail with the beautiful landscapes.

Fantastic place to go with the family. For a stroll or even a gig hike. In the summer you can have a good refreshing swim in the river. I do recommend a visit.
