Having been recommended by Portuguese family to visit Sistelo, we drove our hire car there and saw beautiful scenery and sights. You need to park outside of the central old part of town and walk in. Although we didn’t do any walks as we had an elderly family member with us, we still managed to see amazing terraces of green and take lovely photos. Portugal has so much to offer and this part of the north is beautiful.

Beautiful little village. Not much to see, but a lovely view of the mountains and the traditional stone "Espigueiros". You can then take a good walk through the tracks by the river Vez. Lovely, peaceful but you need to be fit as there are some climes.

So, we were on Sistelo to do the PR14 walk, for many of the TripAdvisor users, the best in Sistelo, and they aren’t wrong, the walk is demanding but fantastic. The Sistelo village is a small village like many others in Portugal, beautiful but not overwhelming. The farming steps build by the Sistelo people on the mountain are very beautiful, maybe the only thing that truly distinguish Sistelo from the other villages.
Good visit, excellent walk, will return for the other walks for sure

this village is in one of the most beautiful areas in portugal that is worth visiting to simply enjoy the spectacular natural beauty of the unspoiled countryside and the wondrous walking trails that weave there way thru this magical place.

Whilst the village dates back to medieval times, the Casa do Castelo (Castle House) was built in the latter half of the 19th century as a palace for the first Viscount of Sistelo, Manuel Goncalves Roque.
The village is dissected into two parts by the N202-2 road. On the southern side of the road, the village climbs up a steep hill with a narrow, cobbled road leading to old granite houses and a lovely array of old granaries, where the villagers would have stored their corn. Next to the granaries is a communal outdoor laundry, fed by a mountain stream.
As enjoyable as the visit had been so far, we had yet to experience the terraced views that had inspired us to visit. They couldn’t be seen from the village itself and the tourist maps posted in the village didn’t highlight any miradouro viewpoints. But I could see that the nearby villages of Padrão and Porta Cova both had terraces of their own, so I decided to head in that direction to see what views they offered.
We hopped onto our motorcycle and turned onto the narrow M1289 road, that climbs up above Sistelo on its way to Padrão and Porta Cova. Wow! The views from up there are just what I was hoping for. There were multiple locations along the road that offered views back towards Sistelo, along with the beautiful terraces that surround it.
Whilst up there, continue along the road for stunning views of Padrao and Porta Cova.

Small interesting place. One of the nearest ways into the Ecovia is quite near. The landscape is enticing.

Very friendly little village. We stopped by to do a walk and also had a coffee and bought some bread off the baler’s truck.

If you are travelling to the north of Portugal don’t miss this little village
Skip all the touristy busy spots and take a break in this gorgeous place
I could spent a few days here exploring but we had just a few hours - we parked by the old church, found the old grain barns, had an amazing lunch

Going there you need to take country roads; although having too many curves the landscape along the way is worth the effort. The town is small but very harmonious. If you have time and you enjoy to walk, look for the ecopist/ecotrail. Enjoy!
