We love castles! This medieval castle is well preserved, and typically at the top of the hill in the town of Belmonte. There is a slight fee to go in and walk up the towers.

Some parts of the castle have been restored but not kept to their traditional architecture. Overall though the castle has been well maintained and is impressive to visit. While we visited there was a small exhibit with some artifacts on display. Aside from that there isn't a whole lot to see/do within the castle.

It is a nice location to view the city surroundings and get a ticket to be transported back in time if you walk in its vicinity during nighttime.

This castle is worth the time if only for the breathtaking views of Serra de Estrela and the valley it perches over. Some historical interest as well and it is well restored

Not a huge castle/fort, but typical for these smaller towns. They have updated it with an amphitheater- would be a nice place to see a performance. We were there just at sunset and the views of the surrounding area and the castle were gorgeous. The castle is illuminated, so makes for wonderful photos. There is also a small chapel with an interesting cemetery to the side of the castle. When we visited the next day, they also had an exhibit of 1800’s clothing which I enjoyed seeing.

Very interesting visit of a small castle, very well conserved. Understanding where and why these constructs were built is a very interesting and this castle is a good example. A must see in Belmonte.

The castle location is the highest point in the region. Therefore, the view is great on sunset when we came. Easy to find, 3 minutes walking from the historical center of Belmonte.

This site was originally occupied by the Romans. It was an important castle on the frontier in medieval Portugal. One of the few castles you can be dropped off by a bus nearby.

They've installed an outdoor stage and seating in the keep of this ruin. Great way to help fund restoration.
