Go to the Lagoa de Canaria turn off onto a dirt road across from a parking lot.
You can walk or drive down the dirt road, it is well graded.
At the end of the road is a picnic area with a trail off the left. It is a good sized trail and well worth the easy climb.
The view is breathtaking.

Our guide Miguel was exceptional! He is very knowledgeable and knows the island like the back of his hand. We spent 3 days touring the whole island with him. We did regions of Sete Cidades Twin Lakes, Nordeste and Furnas. Miguel was very accommodating and adjusted the tours to our benefits so that we could experience as much as we could. We were so happy we did not rent a car and opted to book these tours. We recommend this company to anyone visiting the island. Best money we spent all week!

I chose Azores GreenMark for their focus on sustainability and the efforts they bring to the entire business. My guide was super knowledgable and I was also able to understand the island mentality and local's dreams. I had an amazing day taking in the sites and the vehicle was also very comfortable to get around in. I loved the fact that companies like Azores GreenMark meant I didn't need to rent a car (something everyone tells you you have to do, you don't) and I got so much info along the way too. Thanks!

I was fortunate enough to tour half of Sáo Miguel island with Miguel from Azores Greenmark. It was a really flexible day as it was just me so I got to say my interests and Miguel tailored accordingly.

We visited Sete Cidades, Salto do Calbrito and Lago do Fugo, where we walked to the water which was fun! The views were incredible everywhere and Miguel knew when to have patience to wait for the clouds to clear. Everyone is encouraged to self-drive on the island but I think you miss out on so much without a guide. I learnt a lot as Miguel was very knowledgable on all island matters.

I chose Greenmark as they are the only eco tourism operator on the island - I was pleased to hear that they were into conservation first, clearing the island's trails and then spotted the tourism opportunity second - they understand how to do both and it shows in their experience!

Thanks Greenmark, you rock!!

This was an amazing experience with a fantastic guide. It was just the two of us our guide and everything was personalized. We were there for our honeymoon and we ended our fantastic tour with champagne provided by our guide. We really loved it and would highly recommend this tour group'

We decided to try snorkelling for the first time while in Azores. Milton picked us up at our hotel and provided everything we needed. He took the time to make sure that I was as comfortable as possible and that my experience was an enjoyable one, even though I was uncomfortable in the ocean. My daughter was a natural and loved it. She is now ready to try swimming with the dolphins next trip. Afterwards we were dropped off at our choice of location. Greenmark had brought a Go-Pro along and just sent us some clips of our snorkelling experience. Thank you.

Sympathy, great professionalism, availability, excellent ratio cost price.
I did my track on my last day, and it was magnificent all the information that Valter provided me in connection with the route, and the island's history. I highly recommend this team to conduct tours, trails and other services in São Miguel Island. Thank you for such a pleasant time.
5 Stars without any doubt, highly recommended.

While we did much of our touring of the Azores Island, Sao Miguel, by public service bus the experience did leave something to be desired. Unfortunately, busses are few and far between (and many of them very early morning), they are very slow and wandering (and this is not as scenic as we hoped) and their routes are fairly limited. So, towards the end of our week and we wanted to explore the Sete Cidades to the west of the island, we decided to hunt down a tour company to help us take some of the travelling pain from planning a hike.

The friendly tourist office at Ribeira Grande where we were staying for our final couple of days suggested a new local travel agent called Greenmark and directed us to their tourist office in the centre of town. Within a couple of minutes of arrival, our guide, Milton, had suggested a couple of hikes the following day, agreed a reasonable price for us to pay, that we would have lunch included, and a time to pick us up from the hotel the following morning.

I won’t focus too much on the tour itself given the review is about Greenmark, but we completely enjoyed our day and loved the scenery and our walks.

In terms of the service we received from Greenmark then it was excellent, and Milton gave us the confidence and support for a great trip out. First, he arrived five minutes early (with a trainee colleague), so there were no worries about whether the tour would start late, nor did the start involve sitting around waiting for the guide to arrive. The minivan was new and spotlessly clean (or at least it was until we started clambouring in and out of it in between hikes) and Milton was a careful and confident driver. My beloved enjoys all things cars and she found a soul mate in Milton as they chatted about the unusual and fancy cars on the island (more than you might imagine on a rock in the middle of the Atlantic).

The weather in the Azores in December is somewhat unpredictable and Milton jigged his original plans around a little as there was little cloud in the morning, and he felt it worth taking one of the two climbs first so as to ensure we had the views. He arranged for two main hikes showing different aspects of the area, with a gap for lunch, and some stops at view points for photos. Milton allowed us to make the pace and we didn’t feel at all like we were slowing him up (although at half our age and a good deal fitter than me, I’m sure he could have scampered up the hill and back in half the time). I thought he had pitched the walk well – we wanted something to stretch our legs and lungs a little and we had a fairly steep hike for a couple of hours plus, for our afternoon trip. This had followed our rolling terrain walk of the morning, which lasted about 100 minutes. At the end of the hike we felt we had enjoyed a good walk, but we certainly were not overstretched nor did we feel it the following day. I would have liked to spend another day perhaps going a little away from the formal tracks which were wide and well marked, and Milton assured us he knew a number of other different routes and walks. Alas, it was a flight back to Lisbon the following day.

Lunch was at a little restaurant with a buffet in the village. There was a choice of four types of meal, including fish chicken and meat options. I won’t claim it was the best meal I’ve ever had, but it was good food and the beer went down well with it. The chocolate mousse was excellent for finish.

During the walk, Milton told us something of the island life and that many of his contemporaries had moved to various places across the world. The Azores certainly felt like a place with something of an identity crisis; on the one hand it wanted to retain its old world and isolated charm, but on the other it needed to attract jobs and money to keep its brighter youngsters living on the island. Again, we found Milton relaxed and easy to chat with. Milton didn’t have a set array of facts to share with us; it was more about him picking up on the things that were of interest to us. We certainly discussed different plants during our walk. Milton’s English was very good, and his pleasant and helpful nature came out when he stopped and gave advice to a few folks and travellers that he encountered on our journey.

To sum up, we don’t really do the guided tour thing too often as we often find it a little regimented and stifling. On this occasion we found the Greenmark tour excellent, as our guide picked up on what we wanted to do and easily created a route and tour to be as relaxed as we wanted it to be. Totally recommended.

We arrived by cruise ship in Ponta Delgada knowing very little about the island of São Miguel in the Azores. Thus we were delighted to discover Azores GreenMark offering tours of the island.

Our group of four opted for the Sete Cidades tours, taking in various views of the twin lakes (Lagoa das Sete Cidade), including a café on the shores of one of the lakes (Lagoa Azul), as well as Lagoa de Santiago, the viewpoint of Ponta do Escalvado and a pineapple plantation. Our courier, Milton, was an excellent driver, as you might expect, but we were also impressed by his friendly disposition and knowledge of the history, geography and flora of the island of São Miguel. He was happy to take us to whatever destinations we wished, all for a fixed price which was very reasonable.

All in all, It was a highly enjoyable and entertaining tour, done at a leisurely pace, and the four of us were every pleased to have opted to do this rather than the coach tours which the cruise operator offered at a much higher price.
