We stopped in the outlet, which is just a minute from the central square. The woman working there was very pleasant, and poured us several samples of the liquors available. They also have little tourist trinkets that are hand made, not manufactured outside of the country.

As far as a place to "visit", there's not really much to see here - no tours or anything.

But as a local distiller, if you're in the area or driving through, would definitely recommend stopping.

The owner is super-friendly, and once you're inside you'll be slightly stunned at the number of products they produce. That's often not necessarily a good sign - but I sampled several, and quite a few were excellent.

It's worth it just to have the Goshawk Gin. This is a superb gin - and their different aromatic offerings are a treat. (The tangerine makes for a wonderful G&T.)

The passion fruit liqueur is also good - well-balanced with not too much sugar.

Some of the other products aren't quite up to rave standards - but that's also very much a personal choice I realise. Someone had mentioned the 20-year old brandy (it's not a Cognac), which was fairly complex.

All in all, definitely stop by. Ask for weenie pours and a pit glass if you're driving - they're generous with the tastings! :-)

Visited this Distillery as part of a tour. Was taken on a private tour by the charming and hospitable owner. Extensive selection of liqueurs but the best buy by far is the outstanding 20-year-old Cognac which comes in its own wooden box for a mere 35 euro.

Beautiful location. No entry price, once you enter this place you will hear interesting story of history and traditions of this fabric and making of spirits. In the end you have a chance to taste them and choose something to buy - prices are much lower than in stores.

As others have mentioned, this is not really a tour, but more of a place to try lots of different varieties of alcohol before you buy them. The people were friendly and patiently answered all of our questions. I ended up really liking the tangerine gin and the Queen of the island, it's like Bailey's, but better. We bought some smaller bottles here, and a shot glass.

We did find their products at cheaper prices in the grocery store, so if you're planning to pack it in your checked luggage you might want to purchase them elsewhere. (Although, the tangerine gin wasn't available everywhere, so if you really liked it, you might as well grab a bottle.)

Their products are also available at the duty free at the airport, but at a bit higher price.

Fun stop after a day of exploring.

We were at Cha Gorreana and this was on our way home. (Sidebar: Miradouro de Santa Iria was also on the way home and is also worth a stop!) There was no tour but you see the people working as you walk around. You can get some of these liqueurs at any gift shop on the island but here they have more flavors and more importantly you can taste them before choosing.

Ordered their aged brandy on a whim on our first day in Sao Miguel (the menu translated the name as "Cloaked Woman" which cracked me up for some reason) and really enjoyed it. Looked it up online and discovered the distillery tour. The tour itself is fairly short, but it's also free. You finish with a tasting of their various brandies and liqueurs - also free - and the opportunity to buy said tasty items (definitely not free). Fun little stop, and the staff were friendly and engaged. Also, there is an adorable dog that hangs out there, so a) please drive carefully and b) give him a chin-scratch for me. And yes - I meant to click "yes" to "Would you associate this place or activity with wellness?" You take care of your well-being your way, I'll take care of it in mine :D

A cool distillery in Ribeira Grande. We weren't planning on going there, but since we ended up in Ribeira Grande for lunch, we figured we might as well check it out. The folks there were very nice (as are most in the Azores) and provided us with a brief tour, some history and explanations of their processes, and then a free tasting of the variety of the liquors and liqueurs they make. They have a large selection of stuff, with a lot of good fruity liqueurs. They sell them in a various bottle sizes from sample sizes to small flask sizes to full bottles, and they are all very reasonably prices (I believe the flask sized bottles were just €5).

Sample before you buy! Everyone in our group liked something different. Large selection of liquor, brandy, and gin. Ended up buying things I never would have if I hadn't tried them. Family owned business with 100% natural fruit liquors - passionfruit, banana, blackberry (my favorite), pineapple, and more, and a really yummy cream liquor that tastes like rice pudding (with a sprinkle of cinnamon on top!). They have several sizes available. A nice souvenir that you can bring home and share with others.

We were on a private tour in Sao Miguel and our guide took us to this liquor manufacturer. The facility was lovely and the owner took us through and explained the different liquors and all the awards they had won. We bought a 10 yr old brandy for 15E. Samples were provided so that you can taste it before you bought.

There was a beautiful dog wandering the grounds who greeted me and made my day, but he seemed to have an affinity for sleeping in the parking lot, so watch out.
