We spent 2 weeks in Portugal visiting Lisbon, Evora and Lagos. This was our favorite activity. We had a one hour hike through the cork forest with Antonio. His English was terrific, and his knowledge of cork, wineries and geology astounding. The country side was beautiful and refreshing. Personally, I can only visit so many churches and museums and this was more my kind of touring. After the hike we had a pre-arranged wine tasting which we also very much enjoyed. So much so that we purchased a couple bottles and not just to be nice but we really did like the wine. The tasting room is beautiful and I regret not taking a picture. This was followed by lunch in the town. The tomato soup served was also one of the highlights of our trip. I highly recommend this tour.

What an experience! José Inverno was our guide. José took us through a wonderful scenery within the Herdade explaining all the history of the Herdade and cork trees. Nature is wonderful! Our experience included Dolmens (our initial interest), these were within the property and neighboring ones. Always located in such beautiful landscape. José is naturally a very nice person that explains everything with a smile, but luckily is also an archeologist so we had double the fun! He had been involved in some the discord and others dating and/or preserving the Dolmens so he knew a lot of the history behind of all Dolmens visited in the tour. Most of them only accessible with this tour due to its location either terrain or owner property. To us was a great experience. Then we return to the Herdade to the vineyards. To top it all the lunch at Engaço restaurant with wine tasting was a fantastic ending for this already great experience. I recommend for families, groups of friends, it is a must do! We will do it again!

We had the one hour tour with David, and it was fantastic - extremely informative about the trees and the cork process, naturally, but David was also a wealth of information about the region, its history, and more. I booked for a group of friends and they were a little skeptical at first, but they all agreed it was one of the highlights of the whole week.

We were super excited to this type of activity when visiting around the Evora Portugal area. I called. I emailed. I sent a message via the web site. I sent text messages. I did this multiple times. We even drove to the facility itself and no one was there (wasting important vacation time). We just met some other customers who were trying to buy some wine. I finally got a text message days later that they had space days later (when we would be no longer in the area).

Corktrekking with José was one of the best things we did on our trip to Portugal. We did the actual hike and it was so wonderful to spend about 3 hours hiking (10 kilometers) on the farm. If the weather is not too hot, I'd highly recommend the hike - it really lets you connect with the land and gives plenty of time to learn from José.
April was the perfect time to be there. The wildflowers were blooming and it was cool enough to enjoy the hike. We did it in athletic shoes and brought bottles of water and snacks. There are no toilets along the way so be prepared to "find a tree."
The farm is fairly easy to find - just follow their directions and, yes, you really drive on a dirt road to get there.
After the trek we were able to buy some wine and cork souvenirs at the little shop on site. There is a restroom in that space that you can take advantage of before and after the hike.
José was very informative and we learned a lot about cork. I really appreciate all of the aspects of this precious resource.
Later, when we were near Faro, we also did a tour of the Novacortiça Cork Factory, where they process the cork. That tour was also excellent, and we are really glad we toured the farm first. If you are interested in cork, combining the two is a great, educational itinerary.

While staying at the Herdade da Maroteira we were lucky enough to enjoy some of the activities the farm had to offer. Along with two other couples, we went on a 2 hour tour of the cork forest and vineyard that ended with a fantastic wine tasting.
Ze, our guide, was wonderful! He was incredibly knowledgeable, having grown up around the cork industry in a nearby town, and was obviously passionate about his work. He was kind, funny, and energetic and entertained our many questions.
Though you can definitely walk around the farm--which we did earlier in the day--Ze drove the 6 of us through the forest in a converted bed of a truck and we had a blast. It felt like we were on Safari as we twisted through the forest in the late afternoon, followed by the farm's friendly dogs.
At the end, we all convened back at the main farmhouse for a wine tasting where we sampled several delicious wines. We ended up buying a bottle of their reserve syrah and enjoyed it back at the Cork Lodge.
Thanks to Ze for such a unique and fun adventure!

A group of four of us were touring the small hill towns of Portugal with one of our stops being Vila Vicosa. Luckily we stopped in the tourist information office, and found a brocure for Walk the Cork, a cork farm and vineyard tour. The day before while driving through the area we saw the cork trees, and had many questions we were asking ourselves about how cork is produced. We made some progress getting answers the night before with a bottle of wine and Google, but when we saw this brochure we really wanted to take the opportunity to learn more first hand. The people at the office went out of their way to contact them, and help us set-up a time to go for a tour. We did not know that is was grape picking season, very busy, but they still made time to take us on a 2 hour tour.
The tour was facinating, hearing about cork farming, products, schedules, etc.....but the best part was the people we met at the farm. The farm had been in the same family for many generations and they take great pride in the operation. Too many good stories for me to summarize here, but we left knowing that this would be one of the highlights of our 3 weeks in Portugal, and Spain.
Before I forget it, they also have a vineyard and produce some great wines off site. We bought a bottle of their reserve Syrah which we enjoyed that evening.......excellent.
Thank you to all who we talked to and helped us understand a little more about Portugal.

We stayed at Herdade da Maroteira, Till's Cottage and we had an amazing 4 days! We truly enjoyed our stay, we were made feel very welcome by everyone, in particular by Sr Philip, Sr Chico and Sr Inverno (Ze!). Our children aged 12 and 10, also enjoyed their stay, the walks around the farm, learning about cork and the vineyards. Cabidela and Migas, the farm dogs, were also an highlight for the children. They were extremely friendly and followed them around the herdade, Migas even joined us on the jeep tour around the farm. This is probably one of the highlights and we recommend anyone visiting or staying at Maroteira, to experience the drive around the farm. It is fantastic!!! Ze is extremely kind and passionate, it was a pleasure to meet him and to go on the tour. Maroteira is also located only 20 - 30km away from beautiful sites, which are worth a visit (Monsaraz; Elvas; Evora...). So there is plenty to see during the day too, if you want to take advantage of the location and explore Alentejo.
The walk to the pool during the hottest months could be slightly "harder" for children due to the heat and distance (700-800m walk) but still worth doing. Plans to build a second pool closer to the cottage seem to be in place for 2017.
We recommend Herdade da Maroteira to anyone who likes to explore Alentejo. You couldn't pick any more traditional area. We will definitely return and recommend to family and friends! ...Ops! Forgot the most important: the WINE! Cem Reis Red, White, Rose.... wait till you taste the wonderful wines!!! ;)

My honey and I took the two hour “Corktrekking” adventure that was led by our guide, Jose on the grounds of Herdade da Maroteira near Redondo, Portugal. Felt like we were on a “cork safari” in our Land Rover as we explored the 600 acre property. Our guide, Jose, has a lifetime of knowledge about cork farming that he learned from his grandpa who was a “corkmaster.” In addition to the cork trees, Herdade da Maroteira has a sixty acre vineyard that produces some of Portugal’s finest wine. Very unique experience that helps us to understand the cork farming and vineyard business in a very detailed and fun tour.

We did the extended jeep tour of Herdade da Maroteira, led by Jose. It was an all-around wonderful experience. Riding the farm tracks in the classic old Land Rover was a blast. Learning the history of cork farming was fascinating, and even more so since Jose is the grandson of a cork worker. We ranged through the forest, from the old well, to mountain top, to vineyard. Jose is academically trained, and has a wealth of knowledge on ecology, history, archeology, and just about anything else you have a question on. Jose is so professional and yet friendly; we can't say enough good about him.

Can someone tell us the difference between the hiking tour and the jeep tour (other than the obvious mode of transport)? Do you see/learn more on one vis-a-vis the other? Also, for those who stayed for lunch after the tour, did you do the local restaurant or the lunch on the property 20 euros vs. 30 euros)? What is recommended there? Thank you!

I participated in the walking tour. We had the whole farm to ourselves, and we very much enjoyed the non-technology, non-mechanical peace and quiet. Coming from Lisbon, the walking tour provided an escape from the hum of the city. We also had a chance to make detours as we walk, linger in places we found beautiful, and not feel like we were on a timetable.
We did not participate in the lunch (as it was off season and not offered). We can not comment on that experience.

I stayed in Evora, but the tour began and ended in the village of Redondo. I took a taxi from Evora to Redondo (1/2 hour drive) to meet the tour.
