Great stay. Comfortable and quiet room and excellent welcome from the Reception.
So much more can be done with the Castle and location.
Fantastic views but they could provide markets and fairs in the grounds. Beauty/Rekax breaks and so much more.. and as an Ex-Marketing Manager, I just feel there is so much more to fulfil!!
We enjoyed it anyway!!

We stayed in the Pousada so I will review that separately. As has been said, the views are very good from the castle with its commanding view over the countryside. We have been to many castles in Portugal – we seem to make a habit of collecting them – and this is certainly not the most spectacular or interesting, however it is well worth driving up to the Pousada and castle if you are in Alcacer do Sal to have a wander round the grounds.

Tourist evaluation: Alcácer do Sal, Portugal
Online is often advertised the "Castle of Alcácer do Sal". From Lisbon or its surroundings, with a journey of about 1 hour, you can reach this locality. If your goal is to visit a castle... well... you will be disappointed. You will find ancient foundations, poorly ⁇ ined and surrounded by a lot of garbage, and a fragment of the castle still standing, but only a fragment. The church of Santa Maria do Castelo is obviously closed. This irritates and makes you lose the will to continue visiting the city, which, on the other hand, really deserves a visit.

I suggest mentioning the existence of this pseudo castle in a very marginal way or not mentioning it at all, and instead promote the city itself, which is charming and located on the estuary of the Sado river.

So: Visit Alcácer do Sal for a nice walk; forget the castle.

A castle occupied by a fancy hotel but with a location and view unique.
Even if you don't get in the castle, just go until the door and look south to the Sado river, the bridges and the rice fields are something worthwile!

An overall pleasant and enjoyable sight in this small but beautiful city. There is an archaeological museum on the underground level of the castle with an interesting movie about the city, while the main part of the castle is now a luxury hotel. However, as one of the employees from the museum told us, you should not be afraid to enter! There is absolutely no problem in entering the hotel and heading to the garden where you can take a closer look of the towers of the castle in a nice garden area.

Wonderful modern rooms. Ask for a balcony room, they are the same price as those without. But the food at the restaurant is over priced and one of the two meals was not edible.

Alcaçer do Sal is a region where there was already occupied in the early History, this by Phoenician, Romans and Arabs, this before D.Afonso Henrique’s conquered the castle in the year 1158. Now it is a classified National Monument, with on the inside the “Pousada D. Afonso II.
You can drive up until the Pousada with the car, on this location you also have the archaeological Crypt, who is open to public and also the “Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo”, and in between those to you also have the “zona archaeological”.
Nice and very interesting location with a nice view, very worth full with allot to explore.

Even though we didn't stay at the hotel, we were told that since it is a historic site, the hotel couldn't keep us from seeing the castle. It was worth seeing the modern hotel with the old walls.

The interior, the walls, the cloister, the chapel are all worthwhile visiting. The views are spectacular over one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal.
