Not a large display but well ordered and interesting

Lovely building housing some amazing artefacts with interesting history. Some rooms hold sparse displays and I guess you are supposed to be inspired by their story? Whilst I'm pleased I visited this could hardly be called an 'Art' museum although the skill of the craftsmen was evident as was their art. This was more of a museum representing the early religious history of Massa Maratima with a very narrow nod to some more recent 'modern' art from the 1970s - 80's. Allow no more than an hour.

This museum was the highlight of our recent stay in Massa Marittimo. They have a beautiful collection of religious and profane artwork, some shrouded in mystery.

This is a must-see if you visit Massa Marittima

there are so many things to see and all of high quality and many with historical significance a great place to visit for art lovers and those who would not normally visit such galleries

The old church of San Pietro and attached buildings have been reordered to provide a museum complex, with excellent lighting and air conditioning. The contents of the old Diocesan Museum have been moved here. There are some very unusual exhibits including very early 10th Century sculpture in a primitive style and a few religious paintings showing influence of the Renaissance.A somewhat odd item, to modern minds, is reliquary which is said to hold the foreskin of the infant Jesus. It is easy to scoff, but that would be to misunderstand the medieval mind. It is because of pilgrims paying devotion to such relics that we have many of of our finest churches- Sainte Chapelle in Paris was believed to hold the Crown of Thorns, and Canterbury had to be rebuilt to accommodate the faithful coming to the shrine of St Thomas a Beckett. In fact, there were many churches in Europe claiming to hold this particular relic- the only physical remains of the Lord left on earth, to believing Christians.
