An imposing symbol of the city - you can see this castle from kilometres away. Getting there by foot was another matter. I started at the city centre and followed the signs, climbing a gradient of at times of 30* to the hill top overlooking the city way down below.. The castle stands on a rocky promontory, above sheer walls of a former fortress. A 14th C tower remains as well as the remains of prisons and the large grottos where prisoners were held. In the courtyard is a pit for the most notorious criminals. Archaeological excavations have shown traces of the Hellenistic Period, The Roman one and the Arab one. The view up there is exhilarating and I really felt that all that effort was well worth it.

Worth the walk, but it is uphill. I'm 78 so I did rest a few times on the way up, and the walk was definitely worth the effort. It's easy to imagine what life was like up here centuries before the town developed from a military outpost to a center of trade.

We decided on a walking tour of Modica beginning south from our Palazzo 11 Cavaliere B&B. 1st down to the 18th C San Pietro, then further down to 18th C Church of Carmine. From here we reversed to the north to begin the climb up to the 1272 Castello dei Conti. Soon we spotted its prominent clock tower shinning in the sun, then the signage to Via Castello. It turned into a long series of steps, but once to the top, exposed magnificent views of the valley. From here it was only a downward stroll to the Duomo San Giorgio and its 300 steps down to our Palazzo. Great hike in this UNESCO city.

It was a pity not to visit such a predominant castle due to restoration works. The castle was not accessible for tourists.

Castello has been renovated over 10 years and now open to visitors at last. Well worth views from bastions and don't forget to visit grottos. Go at sunset for views over Modica Bassa and Alta.

I was lucky enough to be in Modica for the opening by Price of Monaco in October 2017.
The view of the city is wonderful. It will only be open at weekends for now. But in the new year the funds will be found to open it for longer hours. At the moment there is no charge.
Even without any displays or information, it is still worth visiting. The gardens and grotto are open too.

Understand that it needs restoration - actually some of the parts we saw on the long way up bear that out!

Unfortunately the castle is closed for restauration, but one can get a very good view of the large clock from lower Modica.

After a very long walk and endless steps we arrived here and discovered that the most beautiful part of the castle, namely the clock tower and the prisons, were closed for restoration work. We paid a reduced ticket and were able to visit the most modern part of the castle, now used as a conference center and which honestly looks more like a dry hospital, and totally lacking in furnishings. Nice view but nothing more. More interesting are the count's caves, which can also be visited, which are located under the castle.
